This school is a mess! If you look on 99% percent of the stair cases you will find used condoms and dead roaches inside the condoms. The schools cafeteria is a utter garbage. There is roaches and flies baked in the food. Hornets make huge nests in the garbage bins. Seagulls attack the students and beg for food. The Police are not even attentful and you can literally walk off campus and they do nothing about it but wave and say be safe... The teachers literally slave in the classrooms and consistently complain about low pay and horrible students. I can literally walk the halls for an entire class period and not be questioned. The students smoke and sell drugs and carry weapons on campus. If your not careful the students throw freshman in garbage cans in sometimes in the foods class ovens! This school is also a mess in its grading system. It still uses the tired 7 point scale. Most MODERN schools use the 10 point scale. Meaning a 50 is a D. The school uses its own dust to clean the floors! The seniors dont care about anyone at all and will mow down people going up the stairs. Speaking of which, if you fall down the stairs people point and laugh without a care in helping you up. Your child will hate it here and would rather die then wake up knowing he/she has to go to this living hell hole!

Most of the faculty I have had teach me has ignored blatant anti semitism directed towards me. Even worse they dont even have the dates for the summer school WHICH SOME KIDS NEED TO GRADUATE ON THEIR WEBSITE. Do N O T enroll your children here.

Just so everyone knows (Chris Maher, too), I graduated from Laney HS in 2009, graduated with a BS from UNC-Chapel Hill last year and am starting my Masters degree in Marine Science this fall at Carolina. Laney may be rough around the edges, but if the student reaches for the stars, they will succeed- yes, even at Laney.Laney offers numerous AP classes to take with wonderful teachers who are dedicated to their jobs. I am still in touch with most of my AP teachers- some have even helped me edit my college essays on their free time. Ive been pretty damn successful and I am thankful for where I came from. Laney was somewhat grimey (pun intended because the principle my first two years was Grimes) and the administration sometimes loose and unhelpful. But the true life of Laney lies in its teachers who work in that grimey school with troubled youth every single day with smiles on their faces.Furthermore and a side note: Cape Fear Community College provides wonderful opportunities to those who cant afford the rising prices of higher education or who work full time jobs to support families. People should be proud when they show their CFCC diploma. So...Chris Maher- in the most Laney-like way I say to you, QUIT HATIN!UPDATE 6/27/2018:Im now getting a PhD and remember my time at Laney fondly. Heck, Im still facebook friends with my teachers! Dont knock this school until you try it. It is definitely rough, but what school isnt these days? At least I can say that the faculty I came into contact with were wonderful teachers and friends. They gave their life to this school and deserve everyones respect for dealing with teenagers all day.

But this school is trash. Teachers sit back and try to survive the day. Theft is a constant. My son had an iPod stolen from him and offered back to him for sale the same day, and even though I verified the serial number on the iPod to the principal over the phone, he would not recover it. Apparently I can randomly guess these things, I should play the lottery. My son also had his bookbag stolen from him twice in a crowd, nothing can be done about that either. I was told he needs to be more careful.This is less like a HS and more like a prison apparently. The guards are afraid of the inmates, I mean kids.As for academics? The best thing about Laney is that it is so close to Cape Fear CC, that way the kids can see their future. Community College at best. Hardees College more likely. Do you want fries with that?

So many Bees. Outside the window, in the trash can, indoors, and even on report card! This is ridiculous!
