I just got a call cancelling AGAIN, less than half an hour before appointment. Two times in one week? You must be kidding. I would expect the quality of students to be much higher. I guess not. I’m not sure I would want to trust your students to cut my hair.I do not plan on using Aveda services, salons or products again. I will be sure to tell all my friends to not book with you. And will review appropriately in social media.I planned my entire week around this appointment.I’m sorry you are so disorganized and have such poor quality students.

I’ve gad my hair colored here multiple times in the past and have always loved it. The stylists and the service this institute provides are amazing. The actual reason for this review is simply to provide feedback on my most recent interaction with a receptionist. Consider that English is my second language.I called today (4/7/21) at 10am to make an appt for my husband and me.The woman who answered my call asked some questions that were delivered quickly and I couldn’t understand completely, so I asked her to repeat. I asked two times and the second time she let out a loud sigh like she was annoyed with being asked to repeat her question.I found this very unprofessional and disrespectful. These types of behavior need to be called out so that they can be addressed by management, especially when these attitudes come from a person who directly interacts with customers. The experience was unacceptable and I hope this front desk receptionist can learn to be more empathetic in how she interacts with others that may want a service there, specifically with those where English is not their native language.

I showed up for my appointment that I had scheduled a month and a half out for foilayage and I a cut and the receptionist told me that I did not have an appointment scheduled. She asked me to wait in the corner while she checked in other clients. After assisting other clients, she looked into my reservation further and contacted the call center who said “I called on Thursday and canceled my appointment because I had lost a loved one.” I had made no such call-they said they must’ve gotten the name wrong, but made little effort to fix the situation and get me rebooked. Such an upsetting and completely unprofessional experience.

Ever since I moved to Seattle six years ago, I’ve been trying to find a quality haircut for under $40 and I finally found it! My stylist Renée was great and very professional. She checked in to make sure that the cut was what I was looking for and her instructor checked her work. The scalp massage 💆🏽 was great. I felt like I was in a fancy salon but only paid $25.00. The people next to me getting their hair cut also seemed very happy with the outcome.

I had a really great experience having a haircut at Gary Manuel Aveda Institute. Ms Gregg and her instructor completed it in a very professional way and made me feel very comfortable all the time. I brought a picture of the idea I had in my mind. It was a pixie cut and it required to cut quite a lot of hair. It was a fun challenge and they went through the process sharing every step and decision with me. The communication between us was fluid and we enjoyed the process. Im so happy with the result and being able to help Ms Gregg on her learning process at the Institute. I wish her a very successful future as a stylist!

I made an appointment for highlights a couple of days before a wedding I was in and after spending nearly 3 hours at the salon, my hair looked exactly the same as when I went in. The student was sweet and apologized for the lack of highlights but noted that she wondered if the highlight color was too dark, only to be told by her instructor that it would be fine. She assumed they wouldnt charge me but I was told by the instructor that I could either come in within 2 weeks to try again or be charged half price. I wanted the highlights for a wedding and wasnt planning on keeping them up after it so I declined spending another 3 hours at the salon the following week but also expressed my disappointment in paying for my hair to look no different. They landed on charging me $20 for supplies because thats what they charge for a shampoo/style. I guarantee you my thin, short hair did not use $20 of shampoo and hairspray. Very disappointed in their policies that take advantage of people who are okay with letting students practice on them. Being disappointed in the end result is one thing, having literally no change in your appearance after spending 3 hours at a salon and having to pay for it is another. Also, both times Ive been there, they told me to fill out a card for two complimentary services (like a hand massage, aromatherapy, etc.) and both times none of the services I selected were done. What a strange practice. I wont be returning to this salon. If you decide to go, ask the instructor to really talk you through the process to make sure youre not going to be charged for something youre not happy with.

I took my daughter for a back to school haircut for her first day at a new school in a brand new city. I purposely took her somewhere I felt confident would provide the fun, funky style she was hoping would help her fit in. We waited an hour, then had a long, detailed conversation w/the stylist and instructor about her haircut. We all agreed on the style, then the student spent over 2 hours cutting very little hair, and the end result was a crooked, shapeless, unremarkable haircut which looked almost exactly the same as when we started - with the exception of the previous cut (which was very cute but had grown out) being destroyed and bangs which were nothing like what we wanted and discussed. When the instructor came over to see the finished product she either honestly completely forgot the entire conversation we had about the style, or played it off very well that she thought the stylist had done a great job. After having sat for over 3 hours my daughter just wanted to get out of there, and was too embarrassed to say she didnt like it, but she was devastated. I offered to take her back and ask them to fix it, but she didnt want to sit through that again ... I dont blame her. They also completely forgot about the complimentary services they had offered when we arrived. I get that theyre students and its cheap, but for the amount of time and money we did invest, I expected much more. They were all very nice, but I think it should have been overly obvious to any of them that this was not only nothing like what we had asked for, but just a bad haircut in general. For that reason, I have no faith in their ability or integrity. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!

First- THIS IS A SCHOOL!!! And they do a wonderful job. The students are on it, the instructors are on it. And because it is a school, they have VERY inexpensive, good-to-great quality haircuts, colors and permanent waves (and more that I havent experienced). For anyone to give a poor review for lack of timeliness or a busied atmosphere, I say you have a lot of nerve, you cheap bastard. LOL. My first visit was to be a model for a perm (something I was very unsure about, but I figured I could always wash it right away)... Logan and her partner did a fantastic job. It took a long time, but it would have taken a long time anywhere. And because it is a SCHOOL, the instructor needed to come by and check the work, something I support when having a process two students had only done on a plastic head until then. Still looks awesome.Again I say, if you want the same exact experience as you would have at an 800.00 day spa, pull your head out. These students are here to give you a great experience WHILE LEARNING AND BEING GRADED.

The first time I came I got a double process (bleach + dye) on my more-than-3-foot-long hair and they did a gorgeous job. A beautiful, rich shade of purple, and the students working on me were really excited about it, which made me feel great. The second time I got a haircut + double process, again with great results. She has fun ideas for my hair, but also matches it with my more conservative and low-maintenance style. The salon itself is very friendly and welcoming. I like that the ambiance at the studio because it has the feeling of a salon, but isnt stuffy and has a casual, fresh feel to it. It is also a more affordable option than the salon itself, which is great for my student budget, but I dont feel like I sacrifice quality because Chandler has been through all the same Gary Manual training, and will likely move up to the salon at some point soon. I shouldve paid more attention but it is hard to see what is happening behind you. Her instructor seemed only concerned about the technicality of the cut not if it matched what was asked for. Like some of the other reviewers, I also ended up with a cut that was Nothing like what was planned or discussed. I thought I was to keep my same shape, we discussed the v-shape, I thought she understood. We discussed 2 inches.... I lost about a foot of virgin hair, unbleached, uncolored, unplanned for. I should have known something was wrong when the student didnt touch my scalp during the hair wash. Is that the *relaxation* treatment that I read In the services?? The next thing that should have sent me running out the door, the student yanking out my hair while hand combing.... I kept thinking, why doesnt she do this more gently? I have thyroid disease, I cant stand to lose hair. Hence, why I am sad about unexpectedly losing a foot of hair I had been growing for many years. The instructor tried her best to reshape it but was overworked, pressed for time, as well as wearing a cast on her wrist recovering from surgery w pins etc. She eventually gave up on giving me layers, and Gasp, grabbed some thinning sheers and just started razor in out huge chunks!! That is also not the look/cut I had planned. Not to mention the future grow out in random lengths. I had a such nice hair before they got to it. I was there 3 hours, had at least 4 different cuts that I kept asking of the could make any more V shape?? When I came in I had an extreme V shape and I also mentioned it with the stylist. When the student stylist was done, she had cut my v shaped long layers straight across in the back with some slight layers near my face. I thought I was to be getting long v shaped layers and was only to lose 2 inches in length. Instead she cut a foot off straight across the back with no layers for movement. I have extremely fine wavy hair and there is a decent amount of it. So if I have a straight across cut, it turns into a frizzy mushroom. I honestly dont think this student has paid attention because the blow drying, the cutting, the brushing, the washing- all seemed like her first time. Do the students ever shampoo the instructor? That would be a good clue something is wrong. I definitely feel like my hair has been ruined. Sad. Feeling immature that I cant stop thinking about my hair. What a waste of time. This will weigh heavy on my mind, heart & soul for many much time..... not sure where we went wrong. The first teacher ah explained the plan too??? Not sure why she spent so long cutting all my length straight across and ruining my layers.....

I have gone there several times because they dont shy away at the request of crazy colors and they are generally cheap. But one thing that does make me sad is the fact that it is a school, and the students have to graduate, so I dont have a consistent hairdresser. Everytime I leave I feel satisfied until I find something that is off. An example would be that when ever I get my hair dyed, the ends dont take in all the color. When I call and ask for the touch up (that they told me to get), its magically more money and no longer complimentary. And although I liked the color I recently got, I found that it is really splotchy. It has purple tones, brown tones, pink tones, and white tones when I asked for an all over lavender dye. Which brings me to another time, when I went in around May and asked for a pastel lavender tone and they gave me a dark purple. Its not like my hair was dark. It was bleached, practically white, and they gave me a dark Barney-esque purple. But I still go, why?I love the staff, pricing, and the bravery to tackle color.

BEYOND PISSED. About a month ago I scheduled a facial at 3pm for tomorrow for my mom as a birthday surprise as well as a haircut at 3pm tomorrow for me while she was getting a facial. I have received numerous phone calls and email confirmations about both appointments, as recent as this afternoon. Then, I get a call from someone telling me that you guys messed up your schedule and cant do a facial for her, and not only that, you are not available until the 14th!? I had an entire day planned of things to do tomorrow for her and now I will have to reschedule everything else due to the inability of your staff to read properly. I am beyond pissed at this situation, and every time I talked to one of your employees the customer service was awful. I was going to mention that tomorrow when I came in. They are rude, and unhelpful and sound so unapologetic that they cancelled in less than 24 hours. Your customer service is horrible, and your communication among your staff is non-existent and the fact that you guys think as a business it is even remotely acceptable to cancel on a consumer under 24 hours is beyond me.

They had cancelled my spa services and called the wrong phone # to notify me so I never got the message. I showed up and the receptionist checked me in while their computer was down so she didnt know that my appointments had been cancelled. After waiting fo almost half an hour, the computer was up and running again and I then was informed of whats going on and that I would not be getting my services done today. I was then offered a shampoo & style service for free for waiting and the person that straightned my hair couldnt have been more clueless and did such a poor job. And I know these are all just students but it was just a wash & style and nothing major like a cut & color. She semed nervous and it felt like she petting my hair instead of working it. She put a ton of product in my hair and made it really greasy & heavy. After she was done straightened it, I looked like a Christmas tree. The top was so flat and the bottom flared out like the tree skirt. It was very bad.

Brought my wife here today for a spot of pampering. We vacation here regularly and this particular spa was recommended by several of our friends, who are locals.I dropped her off, walked around the area for a bit and then popped back in a few hours later to retrieve her. She met me with a stiff grimace. While her hair turned out just fine, she was wholly put off by several of the students halloween costumes, which she described as uncomfortably racist. Surely the staff or the owners were aware that others might find a Native-American war bonnet (worn by a non Native American) or a Mexican-American gangster look to be offensive? To be sure, we both found it offensive and in poor taste. Its unfortunate that in a place like Capitol Hill, which seemingly celebrates diversity, we were subjected to that. We will not be back.

Giving student the opportunity to work on real people is why I go to this School. The instructors are everywhere which makes it impossible for them to make a mistake. The products are amazing, just one item that prevents a 5 star rating TIME ! Its expected prepare to be there at the minimum 2 hrs. For the record its the BEST value.
