Great place to get your CDL. John is very on point with his evaluations on the students maneuvers. Karen is very very patient on the bobtail & trailer trips. Ben & Bill are very professional & patient when testing the drivers. Mike is very blatant when testing the students on the in cab & air breaks for the fact that he wants to make sure that safety comes first👍💯 Front office staff is great. Ive been driving since the age of 14, & Ive only driven manual just a few times in my life. Ive learned a great deal of double clutching & the responsibilities that comes along with up shifting & down shifting here at Smith & Solomon. I would recommend anyone to this School. Thank you all for your help.

Let me start by clarifying that Smith & Solomon is a commercial school that gives you the guidelines to successfully pass the DOT test.It is up to the individual to strive to become a professional driver. In my adventure through Smith & Solomon I met beautiful, professional and highly qualified people, the administrative staff earned my thanks and respect, Ben, Kiki, Lidia and the rest of the team if I do not mention you, know that I appreciate you as well.In the classroom my experience was good, excellent handling of information, however I can assure you that, there is room to grow and update. In the yard the adventure turned wild, this review should be 5 stars, but it only took one person to knock them down, Karen; Joe; Daniel; Darrel deserve recognition and respect not only for being professionals, but also great human beings.A very sincere and special thanks to Evelyn and Mike students who went above and beyond putting their own interests aside to help me and other students.

Writing this review for the Norristown Campus. The training yard and it’s Instructors are very unprofessional. They play favoritism and really need a whole new staff. I paid almost 5k to teach myself. While the instructors stand around pretending to work. I was scheduled a road test Dec. 16th 2020 and failed. Then rescheduled for another test Jan. 12th 2021. I didn’t feel confident about that test. I asked one of the instructors to walk through the pre trip with me.The day before to find out that there is a checklist for the entire pre trip, maneuvers, and over the road driving. That checklist was never went over with me and should have several times. Throughout the year of me being in attendance. The words of the instructor and his apology. That checklist is put in place to make sure the students are ready for the real test. So I called the instructor to reschedule my test. I have not yet to hear from them. If zero stars was a option that would be my rating. I definitely want and deserve a refund! The better business bureau need to be called!!!

I just passed my CDL test today and could not be happier! Great group of people down there, the instructors are very knowledgeable and are eager to handle any questions. Before Smith and Solomon i had never driven a manual transmission. One instructor I want to shout out is Daniel, within only going out on the road twice with him I was upshifting and downshifting smoothly. The guy knows what hes talking about and is consistent with the way he teaches. Just like anything else in life you get out what you put in. If you show up to the school and think youre going to pay the tuition and magically its just going to absorb into your brain youre sadly mistaken. It takes hard work, practice and alot of studying to get to where you need to be! Thank you to all the staff and instructors at smith and solomon, and a especially to Daniel he helped me understand the fundamentals.

Firstly this review is long overdue and to the Staff at Smith & Solomon I apologize. I attended in Philadelphia and my experience was great. I passed my road test in August of 2019. I was super proud of myself but it would not have been possible without their awesome staff and the help they gave me throughout the whole process. Starting with Ms. Lydia, Kiki, and Vanessa they were always very professional and at the same time polite. I cant imagine anybody having a negative thing to say about them. Then there was Steve. He prepared us for the permit test. That man really knows his stuff. I have to mention how patient he was with my group. We were bombing him with all kinds of questions and scenarios and his answers were always on point. To say the least I was way more prepared for the yard then I thought I would be. Thank you again Steve! Then there was the yard instructors. Tim, Karen, Darryl, Josh, and Jay. Im grateful for having the pleasure to learn from every one of you. Darryl was/is the truth. I feel so indebted to that man. If driving instructors had a league I guarantee yall he would be a starting All Star. I see a lot of good reviews for him and rightfully so. It was the same in the yard. His name was always buzzing everybody liked his teaching style and he was so relatable. I can say the same about Josh as well. Both of those guys went out of their way to make sure I was well prepared for my road test. I didnt get to ride with Karen much but she actually was the first to take me on the road. She made me feel comfortable and built my confidence and I could see why people wanted to ride with her so much. She was good! I learned my maneuvers on the yard mostly through Tim and Jay I struggled in the beginning but thanks to those guys I caught on pretty quickly.Ben gave me my road test. Before I go any further I have to say this...Im kind of worried that someone reading this could get the feeling that I have something to gain from speaking so highly about this School and its staff, but I dont. Its been 9 months since I passed my road test and I never looked back. I was supposed to go back and pick up my diploma and transcripts and I havent even done that yet. This is genuine gratitude for each person I mentioned. Whoever is reading this can take or leave it but my word its all true. Now back to Ben. Its time to take my road test and Ben walks into the yard. To me he seemed like a no nonsense type that that was cool and down to earth as the saying goes. If that makes any sense. I was super nervous in the beginning but Ben was so smooth and cool the whole time it was like he forced me to be be relaxed. By the middle of my test I felt like I was showcasing my new skills to my big bro. It still felt like a test but his coolness played a big part in me being able to pass. Thanks again to all you guys!

The yard instructor jay AKA J’Von never has time to teach, gives his attention to his phone rather than help students, and always has a problem when you’re available to attend extra training. Makes me feel like I’m being rob for my money! I had many students compliment and thank me for teaching them more than he has and I’m just the student . I had a great learning how to drive experience with few instructors thanks to Karen, joe, Dan, and Darrell. The school needs a better yard instructor because of him they lack yard teaching for the Pre-trip inspection. My ambition and determination is the reason how I found my way to learn tractor, the coupling system, and trailer inspection on my own.

I attended Philadelphia campus. Great place to learn CDL. From information desk, admission, job placement, manager, all trainers in class room, yard, road. From A. to Z. They help you, work with you and your problems, they teach you, prepare you well for a new carrier, new life. I dont want to mention names, all of them, one better than the other. They have enough computers, lot of trucks, professional knowledgeable trainers and a system which works at the end. You learn on your own pace. Cant advise this school enough.

Karen is the best driving instructor any CDL student will ever need. She was my instructor and taught me how to be a safe driver.Since graduating from Smith and Solomon at the end of February 2017, Ive been working at Werner and I will say she taught me the right stuff.Werner safety department gave me three different road test from three different locations throughout my tenure here, and all three different road test is exactly what Karen teaches at Smith and Solomon, no more, no less. Werner gave me a road test when they qualified me as a solo driver, before they sent me out on my own, and three weeks into my job, they gave me an on the job road test, and the third one after 6 weeks into my job. You pay attention to what Karen teaches you, you will have no issues with your road test at least at Werner....Karen teaches you all you need to know to pass your company road test.I got my job at Werner through the recruiter that came to visit Smith and Solomon Philadelphia branch. I didnt have to look for a driving job, my job came and looked for me.

So you know, they are human, sometimes they might talk to you a little bit rough when you keep doing the same mistakes over and over on the road, but thats not going to kill you, just keep practicing, because driving a truck is not a game. Let me start off by saying that I personally cannot speak for any other locations, but the one on tacony st. Short story..... The first leg of my journey starts with classroom/CDL-A permit prep with Mike and later in the week with Mark whom was training for the classroom teaching position. Mike is one of the testers currently, so be nice. Both have a wealth of information. Both are great guys. When Mark isnt in the classroom hes in the yard with the students passing off his knowledge and still learning himself from students.Leg 2: Yard Time. I tested and passed my permit test with help from Mike and Mark plus a few apps. In the yard my class and myself met with Tim (The yard dog) who showed all of us the in cab, air brakes and finally the outside pre trip points on the tractor & trailer. All this is over the course of my second week with Smith and Solomon. My third week was still with Tim showing me how to straight line back, off-set back and parallel park. Tim may seem a little standoffish when you first meet him, but dont let that deter you in any way. I would probably be the same way being stuck in the yard all day with a bunch of newbies. Tim has alot of experience and is more than willing to answer any questions you might have. Make sure that you ask and listen. Without Tim I wouldnt have had a chance of graduating. Great guy.Leg three: Road Time. This really started with Dante in the middle of my second week. Dante told me one day to come with him along with a few other students. We got into a truck with a newer student in the driver seat and left the yard. He rotated through the four of us, driving on the small streets until Dante got to me. Intimidated, but with a very small amount of confidence I took the driver seat and screwed up royally. Couldnt find the gears, no idea what double clutching was, cant downshift at all, and giving little school children on Richmond Ave. nightmares for life. I went out with him a few more times after that and Dante helped me improve more and more each time. Dante also has the patience of a saint and nerves of steel. Another great guy with a ton of knowledge.Leg three: cont.; Then comes Karen. The reason Karen gets her own paragraph is because I spent most of my time behind the wheel with her. Karen took us on trips through Bucks County and over to Boardingtown, NJ. She has a kind, easy going, soothing way about her. I had a problem with finding 8th gear on a down shift and Karen calmly instructed me on how to precede and later showed me how to avoid that problem. Karen also has a ton of experience and knowledge plus an amazing personality even though she called me Brian in my last 2 days there. Lol.Leg four: Skills to the Test. In my fifth week I felt that I was ready and approached Bill about setting up a date to test. Bill & Ben scheduled me February 15. It strangely enough ended up with both Bill and Ben testing me on that day. Bill was testing Ben and Ben was testing me. Slightly nerve racking, but both guys were great and I ended up passing that day. DONE! On my way to my new career.I want to thank Smith and Solomon plus the instructors that they employ. Because of the tools and knowledge provided. I hope to have a lengthy career with Werner. Thank You.THANK YOU ALL

Smith and Solomon is the best Tractor Trailer school I ever went too! I checked out other big schools before that and those other big names are after your money and rush you out to take your road test. Smith and Solomon gave me as much hands on and time that i need whether your ready at your 160 hours or if you need more time to go beyond those hours. There is no time frame when your ready to be tested, when your ready your...... ready thats it! I enjoyed all the teaching methods that Karen taught me on how to operate and drive safely on the road. Karen didnt only take us all on the test route, Karen also took us on some local quiet roads to help us get comfortable driving the Tractor Trailer whether it was practicing the double clutch, or working on your turns and whatever else you needed to improve on. Donte is as well a very good instructor and very patient, if he sees something in you that you need to work on which that one instructor didnt notice, hell point it out. Reggie on the other hand hell work with you but his lack of patience is terrible!!! If he sees something you still need to work on and been in the school for a while hell start his favorite saying...... How many months have you been in the school for and start yelling at you without helping you continue on what you still need to work on and if his patience gets even worse hell say i never want to help you train again. His favorite saying is... Are you a Carpenter or a Trucker? Than he will say i dont see you as a trucker and youll probably will never be one! Sul is an excellent teacher, hell work your mind and body and turn you into a trucker. Sul Helped me out with my Pretrip 100%. He got me so good i was able to teach it and recite it in front of everyone. The day i took my test i got a 91% on my Pretrip baam!! Sul as well if you lucky to get him to go out with you on the road hell act like an examiner to all of you and grade you like its Test Date. Be prepared take every word of his advice. On November 21, i was training with Donte on the road and i was making errors, but when he told me what i need to work on to pass my test i worked on it and stayed focused. when November 22 came i took my test and passed it with flying colors. If you stay focused and patient your time will come and youll pass your test. Test Date was actually the most relaxing moment of my life. Mike is an excellent examiner very patient follows all the procedures of how the D.M.V Manual says it. The day i took my test, i was able to double clutch, shift, down shift and perform all my other road skills as well with no problem even if the traffic was horrible, raining and snowing. There was one day on 95 north traffic was so horrible, i had to down shift from 50-55 all the way to 6th or even 5th smoothly back and forth without hesitating. If you think like a trucker youll turn into a trucker. Stay Focused, Be Relaxed and Stay positive you all will pass your test 100% and land in the dream company you want to work for one day even if you start out with the Starter Companies. I passed my test on November 22. I Want to thank Sul, Karen, Donte and Tim for preparing me for my test. Tim hes a funny guy he always likes to say when driving with him on the highway going on the ramp of 95N Speed up....Speed up..... and after words hum his favorite song thousands of time like a Humming Bird. Now Tim is very good at helping you prepare for your Yard Skills for the test. Kiki shes very patient when it comes to payments and understand that we all have hard financial times and shes grateful for whatever payment you can give her at your hard financial times. Olivia one of our school representatives, shes very nice and patient and any questions you have whether its about Smith and Solomon or how the trucking industry works in real life when you start working for a company, she can help answer that question right away. Thank you Smith and Solomon for all your hard work and dedication for turning me into a Commercial Truck Driver.

I’m currently enrolled in this program to receive my CDL Class A. During the beginning of the program we were taught and assisted in class by Mike. He was very helpful in helping us prepare for our permit. We have three instructors who assist us while we are out on the yard; Aaron, Karen and Sul. Aaron helps us with our maneuvers and Sul helps us with our pre-trip. All three instructors have taken us out on the road for practice.I have had a pleasant experience with all instructors. I am looking forward to receiving my CDL Class A.

Edit: 2/7/18:I will have to agree with the reviewer Carl that the 5star reviews are bogus. I see some guys that I had class with and shared the same experience as I did giving a good review. Its sad some people wont speak up in uncomfortable situations. I was asked to change my review multiple times but i cannot without valid reason. And since there is a character limit on the review I cannot update in any better deal while leaving the previous review intact.Original Review:If youre taking the time to read this please take heed to what Im mentioning. Unfortunately 0 stars isnt an option. As of 9/11/17 I am on my fourth week at this school and its an overall terrible experience. Im on the night class which is only 3 days a week, M-W, and 5 hrs each, 5-10pm. I acquired my permit and endorsements between May & mid July before attending this school.I spoke with the admissions office and they would not cut the price of their program just because I was ahead of the game. Their Class A program is currently at $4,300 and you need to complete 160hrs before you can schedule your road test. At this price you have to still go to the DMV and pay for each and every test you plan to carry on you CDL. Thats the FIRST FLAG. SECOND FLAG; My first two days out in the yard I wasnt given any direction and didnt even work with an instructor. Third Flag; During this first week, Tues. & Wed., The instructors shut down the building at 9:30pm. REALLY! At $4300 I need to be practicing for all 5hrs. Week two wasnt any better. Monday they shut down at 9pm, Tues. 9pm, & Wed. 8:30pm. I was heated. That Tuesday I got there right before the managers left and told them the situation. They said that shouldnt be happening and theyll talk to the instructors. So as you see they didt take heed to the managers. That Wednesday night the instructor told 3 guys on the night class to tell the managers we left at 9:30 and the clock out pc wasnt working. This is bad business. If Im not behind the wheel practicing then why the hell am I paying $4300 out of pocket? Monday of week three comes and I speak to the manager again and he assures me everything has been taking care of after he tried to blow me off from telling him about Wednesday nights lies from the instructor. This week was a little better but I still havent spent any time with an instructor. Ive been learning from other students. Not cool at all. All Ive been doing is backing up and pulling forward for 15 minutes every hours. There arent enough instructors for all the students nor trucks. The instructors will go and sit on a bench and talk amongst themselves rather than teach you how to back up a tractor with a trailer. As the students play musical chairs in the trucks I have watched youtube on my phone to learn how to straight line back. Ive also used youtube and Grand Theft Auto 5 to practice offset backing just to understand the mechanics. I also use a Logitech G27 Racing Wheel on Gran Turismo 6 to practice clutching. I have taught myself much more than any of those instructor have. This is extremely ridiculous. Im on a tight schedule since I acquired my permit before attending. Cutting out early for the night will now force me to renew my permit if I keep to their 160 hrs. This place is crooked. Every student feels the same way but no one speaks up. As far as I know I may be the only one that has. Everyone else says the same thing, Im going to just get these hours and get the hell out of here. This solves nothing. Ive read the reviews but took a chance since I have a friend that didnt share this experience when they went some years ago. I met another driver that went here 10 years ago and it was the same thing. The only difference is they charged $3000 at the time. Same student mentality then too. I may go to the Better Business Bureau but they have taken payments for better ratings some recent years ago so Im not certain. I may have to seek out a lawyer.FYI: Equipment is outdated, broken, and very unsafe.
