My college-age daughter and I attended a one-day self-defense class for women. Due to the great word-of-mouth that Id heard, I had high expectations going in. The workshop exceeded those expectations! Our eyes were opened, our skills were developed, and we managed to actually have fun at the same time. Every woman NEEDS to attend a Womens Self-Defense Workshop. Sign-up now. You wont regret it.

My husband encouraged me to sign up for a womens self defense seminar after meeting Roy. I was unsure of what to expect, and went into the building feeling intimidated and nervous. Roy has the gift of being able to switch from humor to seriousness. His tone really helped me get into the right mindset. The truth of the matter is living in a world with evil people requires a certain reverence to be able to deal with threats, but humor allows us to decompress from the ugly truth behind attacks that happen all over the world and could possibly happen to me. Roy also had a very helpful and experienced assistant, Matt. I thank both of them for their willingness to teach children, teens, women, and men the realities of the world and how to empower themselves against potential attacks.

My teenage daughter attended the Saturday self defense seminar. She struggles with social anxiety as well as a mild paralysis in her right leg. Her therapist recommended a self defense class as a way to help her with empowerment and self esteem. During the class she transformed from a shy, withdrawn little girl to an empowered young Lady! Roy and Jess were both so kind and showed a sincere concern for her issues. She plans to join a weekly class and I’m going to sign up for the Saturday seminar as soon as I’m available. I can’t think of a soul who wouldn’t benefit from SMSD.

I was blown away with Roy Shields Womens Self Defence Class that I enrolled my daughter and myself in. I initially wanted my daughter to learn how to protect herself before she left for college. I quickly learned that as a Realtor, I needed this class for myself as well! You do not think about danger until it presents itself, and by then, it may be too late! As a Mother and as a working Realtor meeting strangers every day, I cannot recommend this class enough. My daughter learned that even though she didnt weigh 100 lbs, she was a tower of strength! Roy Shields is the tool that may save my daughters life and mine one day! I cannot express to you how much you need this class! I HIGHLY recommend Smoky Mountain Self-Defence! It will open your eyes and change your life! Thanks Roy!

Took my daughter and mom to one of the Saturday Ladies Self Defense Seminars. Afterwards my mother’s exact words were that “every women should take this class no matter what their age.” Roy and his staff use REAL life experiences to teach you how to injure your predator so that you can remove yourself from the situation. Roy is great at adding some humor to the class to lighten the brutal reality of the situations...even my 13 year old daughter listened and recited what she learned from the class. Your time and money will be well spent if you take this class! Prepare yourself before it’s too late.

Like Roy, I am a realist and very honest and I have a lot of conflicting feelings about the 7 hour workshop. I have social anxiety and I did not want to take a self defense class, but I knew I needed the knowledge and thought I could handle it based on his description of it. If you are shy or anxious, it helps to take this class with a friend or family member, because it’s no fun being by yourself and being ignored by the others. If I had known that at the very end he puts you on the spot with everyone watching for 30 seconds, I probably would not have taken the class. Those are my anxiety triggers and it’s not possible for me to pretend the class is a real-life dangerous situation. We learned A LOT of moves (arms in the morning, legs in the afternoon) which was great, but also a bit overwhelming. I was disappointed that we did not learn how to handle SPECIFIC situations. From this workshop I guess you’re supposed to focus on the moves you like best (or can do best), and forget the others. In a real life situation, you can’t go thru all the moves in your head. That’s the problem with our world today, there’s constantly too many options. It would have been nice to learn how to handle being grabbed various ways from behind when you can’t see the person coming. The workshop easily could have been an hour shorter. Roy goes off on so many tangents when he is telling stories, instead of getting right to the point. It’s very unprofessional to not end your class at the time it is supposed to end. Don’t get me wrong, the majority of stories told were helpful and informative, but the digressions were not necessary. I feel too much time was spent on guard and cover exercises in the morning, while the afternoon felt rushed and there was one topic he didn’t even fit in.You have to be able to think fast and move fast, you HAVE to be fit. I am in shape but I was INCREDIBLY sore for 2 whole days afterwards. And my right arm still hurts a week later. Yes anyone can learn these moves, but not everyone can learn so quickly. This class really is geared toward younger people. If you have long nails, expect some of them to break.Lunch comes from a nearby restaurant and is very generous. The club is a normal sandwich (not cut in 4) with 2 meats and no bacon. Brownie for dessert. You won’t go hungry.Despite the issues, I do feel Roy is a very good instructor (his assistants were awesome), I appreciated his honesty and advice, and he treated us professionally and with respect. I did not feel my religious beliefs were respected, but I felt respected as a woman.

Attended the Womens Self Defense seminar at Smoky Mountain Self-Defense today. I feel like my body is officially a deadly weapon now. Im no longer afraid of what damage an attacker might do to me, because I can and will dish it out if i need to, and thats a big deal for a woman my size.
