This school claims to be bully free, but when the topic arises outside of their empty first grade understanding of how to prevent it then they are completely inept at actually carrying through on their promises. I was bullied the whole time I attended (I’m autistic, so I’m extra at risk for this sort of thing) and it took endless poking and prodding for them to finally do so much as contact one of the bully’s parents. Everyone hates the principal, I once had a math teacher who openly stated that she didn’t respect us (she also failed to respond AT ALL in many cases of mistreatment by my classmates. In plain view.), and the water fountains taste awful. One time I went to the nurse with a stomachache and she gave me some unfiltered water from the tap— when I left, my stomach felt like knives. The special ed teachers, while well meaning, can come off as condescending. All of the events employ shameless price gouging, blocking off all water fountains (not that you’d want to drink from them anyway) and selling various beverages for two bucks a pop. This strategy extends to day to day life here as well, now that they’ve implemented bottled water machines that you can use if you don’t want to choke down the sewer sludge running through the pipes. Everyone I’ve ever talked to who went here says they hated it. I’m pretty sure the home ec teacher has gone senile. All these reasons and more should prove to you that this school is the education equivalent to hot garbage roasting on an asphalt slab on a blazing summer day...Also their mascot is really, really stupid.

This is a good school whoever rated this a 1 star is stupid. There are hardly any fights here. People here are lucky if they had to go to a school like Mendez or burnet they would probably get beat up.

I’m writing this as a parent whose son went through Lamar Middle School and who has a daughter there.Lamar is a great school. The principle Mr. Lewellyn is amazing. He seems to have the time and energy and concern for every issue that is brought to his attention. Sets a great role model for the staff, provides innovative programs and opportunities for those who would be interested in taking them. He goes through tremendous lengths to accommodate student requests and needs.Lamar is home to the Fine Arts Academy. Its not a separate program, it’s a collection of elective classes. If you are admitted to the fine arts you have to take certain courses. For those who are in district you have the option of taking those courses so it makes little difference other than a bullet point on your child’s academic resume.Overall the programs are good. Its still AISD with their “everyone’s a winner” grading policy. If your looking to go head to head with the greatest academic challenges the district has to offer you won’t find them here (That’s the Kealing magnet program). The academic program is decent but not overly competitive or stressful. Its perfect for kids who are middle of the road academically. They will be challenged but not overwhelmed. Future valedictorians may not grow as much as their parents think they should. The culture of a school is always shaped by its kids. In this case white, suburban, liberal and affluent. They represent the largest demographic in the school. Those who don’t interact well with that demographic will probably feel more ostracized than normal. There is enough diversity at the school that if you don’t fit that bill you won’t be the only one around. Like most places birds of a feather flock together. When socializing the kids segregate themselves along racial and social lines. They all get along well enough though. There are no gang issues to speak of, race relations seem to be ok.The teachers overall seem to be a pretty good lot, though it’s a mixed bag with personality and what your kid responds to. They are not all magical like the principle. All the praise aside this is still Jr High and your child is still dealing with the worst adolescence has to offer. Kids of that age can and will be turds to each other. Plenty of kids seek to establish their emerging social identities and personal independence by being a dumbass. There isn’t a whole lot of physical bullying but the kids still go after each other psychologically. There is the usual anti-bullying propaganda from the staff but only the more serious cases will see administrative attention. Otherwise they would have to teach entire classes from the in school suspension room. Its no better or worse than what the kids do to each other hanging out in their free time. Yes there are drugs (most of the kids probably get them from their parents stash) but they don’t seem to be very common and are mostly off campus. The number of actual fights over the school year can be counted on one hand and still have fingers left over.Overall it is a GREAT school. Before my son went there I was very nervous (my Jr High back in the 80’s was a ball of suck and I went to a “good” one). I have lived in the area a while and heard a lot of horror stories from the school from the years prior to Mr Lewellyn. Lamar was under enrolled at that time because a lot of local parents pulled their kids out of AISD after elementary for “better” schools. So the district filled the seats with kids from the east side with predictable results. Which created a self-reinforcing cycle of white flight. That practice ended years ago. Lamar is so Best now its closed to most transfers unless you get in the Fine Arts Academy. I have no regrets sending my kids there.
