A welcoming group with all skill levels and supportive of new comers. Mestre Bomba is enthusiastic, spirited, and will push you to get a great workout and step up your game. The culture of capoeira is embraced at Barro Vermelho and the studio is a space of rejuvenation. Park practices are most excellent as well.

I initially joined this group in 2013 and returned again after six years abroad. Its been wonderful to see how the group has grown and continues to be a supportive, tight-knit community. With capoeira you get a great mix of martial arts training, core-building exercises, music, Brazilian history/culture and Portuguese, and more. Mestre Bomba is a wonderful teacher who really cares about his students and brings a joyous energy to every class; and you see that openness and warmth reflected in his students as well. The group is still active online and outdoors (with effective social-distancing measures), and its been marvelous to have this thriving space in current times.

I found Capoeira Fitness DC on groupon. I have enjoyed every minute of each class. It challenges me to improve my balance, core, and conditioning. It is an amazing experience with a great group of people. I highly recommend everyone to try a class. I guarantee you will fall in love with Capoeira, the music and history like I did.

I joined Barro Vermelho with no prior experience in capoeira but had an amazing time learning from and being a part of this community. The classes are fantastic and the classmates are actively looking to help give advice/tips on how to improve. Moreover Mestre Bomba is a great teacher and really cares about his students. Id highly recommend these capoeira classes regardless of experience or physical ability.

I craved to find a workout that challenged me while building community and that is exactly what I found in Capoeira Barro Vermelho. Mestre Bomba cares about all his students, no matter their level. He is patient and great at explaining new moves in a way to help you get it quickly. The students are not there just for a class or to improve their skill. They enjoy spending time together and are genuinely friends outside of class. They support one anothers growth in capoeira and encourage one another. If you want an inviting community to learn martial arts, this is it.

I came to Barro Vermelho very timid - Id watched my lover practice it many times before - flips, fast kicks, and music in Portuguese. With an almost non-existent athletic background (seriously, marching band and yoga) and serious knee and ankle injuries, I tried out the class on a two-week new student special. I could barely do the basic moves and was in a class with all advanced students whod been practicing for years. However, instead of dirty looks and irritable sighs, I was met with encouragement and advice and assurances that everyone looked silly at first. So I came back after two weeks... and then again... and again... and after about two months, I was cartwheeling for the first time in months, beating the plateau in my weight loss, and building muscles I didnt know I had! Since then, the journey in growth has been nothing short of excitement, hard work, and continued love from the students and Mestre Bomba. Im in love not only with the physical art and challenges and defense, but with the way capoeira cannot be separated from the culture - learning Portuguese, instruments, and history and tradition is all a part of it. The capoeira community has enhanced my life in every way and I couldnt have found a better group to enter it with.

I have been doing capoeira for over 10 years and always look for a group to join when I move somewhere new. So when I came to DC several years ago, I was really glad I found Barro Vermelho and have been with the group ever since. Capoeira is more than a full-body workout. It is about joining a community and I have made life-long friends in the group. We not only have practices together, but we also have bbqs and other social events together, and we also do performances, like a recent one at the Brazilian Embassy for the Embassy Walk weekend. You dont have to be Brazilian or speak Portuguese or have any prior experience in martial arts. We have students of all ages, sizes, and experience levels. It is a welcoming environment and Mestre Bomba will work with you to tap into your potential.

The experience with the group Barro Vermelho is terrific! It has a great balance of physical conditioning, martial art application, Brasilian music and culture, and encouraging comradary from the instructors and the students. Another added bonus in training with this group is that you get to study under the only Capoeira master in the DMV, Mestre Bomba who is a native Bahian and knows his stuff.

Im over 40 and about thirty pounds overweight, so I felt intimidated at first. The group and Mestre Bomba made me feel right at home and were patient with me. Now I can confidently do all of the kicking movements and I love the workout and camaraderie. This is authentic capoeira--Mestre Bomba himself is from Brazil--and I love all aspects of the capoeira culture! The parties are also good!
