I learned a great deal in the beginners class and am looking forward to continuing classes with THEATRE LAB!

I took the Public Speaking the Actors Way class in May 2018 and found it to be well worth the price. The text for the course was full of helpful theory on public speaking using acting techniques. These were put into practice in class. Students learned how to act -- imagining themselves or the audience in different ways -- to bring out their best performance. I highly recommend this course.

As a late blooming actor (started seriously in my 60s!) Im thrilled to have found a school/community that offers such a stunning array of classes/teachers. Serious professionals supporting our work. A community of theater lovers. And so much fun! what more could anyone ask. Thank you Theatre Lab!

I am a volunteer and I truly enjoy the entertainment of the plays! The staff is outstanding and the student actors and actress are Phenomenal ! Seating is ideal . The only recommendation I say is during intermission make a short announce regarding food concessions for sale and perhaps display or sale some Theater lab paraphernalia such as T-shirts or small bags I would definitely buy one ! The Theatre Lab is a great theatre resource for the DC/East Coast region! I loved attending classes, and the instructors were always knowledgeable, accessible, and were all working professionals in the industry. I would highly recommend attending classes here if youre thinking about acting in the DC Area. Theyre amazing!

Such a fabulous experience. Whether youre a newcomer to the theatre, or a working actor looking to brush up or expand some specific techniques, The Theatre Lab has classes that can work for you. Ive been a part of dozens of productions, from staged readings to full plays and musicals, and every experience has been wonderful. They also offer an Honors Conservatory program for up-and-coming actors to focus and hone their skills.

This is a great place to learn acting, study the craft, and make real-world connections in the industry. The environment is safe and supportive. The staff is top notch and approachable. And I have worked with people I met there, both staff and students, in my career on stage/film/television ever since.

TL provides access to learning from DCs most talented theater folk. You can take a class anywhere. But at TL, the passion instructors have for sharing their art, is inspiring. That vibe starts with co-founders, Deb and Buzz.

Started in Theatre Labs Honors Conservatory and was transformed by the year. Incredibly supportive environment with teachers from D.C. Theater who pushed me to be the best actor/self I could be. I have taken this training to work professionally in DC theater community. A dream come true!

The Theatre Lab is a great place to take acting classes. They are taught by professionals (most of them working actors), are reasonably priced and varied. They are appropriate for beginning actors to experienced.

Theatre Lab has changed my life in ways I never anticipated. I started out with no acting experience 3 1/2 years ago and have taken many classes and acted in a play in Theatre Lab. The teachers are all expert, committed and supportive. Ive learned so much about acting, the worlds of theatre, TV, and film, and about myself!

My experience at Theatre Lab was challenging and career, as well as life changing. At times I was challenged to the point of wondering why I ever decided to enroll in the Honors Program only to find that staying the course was the door through which growth resides. I have learned to embrace fear and risk taking.

My rising 10th grade son participated in Theatre Labs (TL) summer pre-professional musical theatre program. There were a good mix of boys and girls in the program. The program was totally professional! The kids had to study up on the historical period in which the musical was set and were asked (during their off hours) to research and write a few paragraphs on assigned topics. A professional actor came in to work with some of the performers songs. The final performance was REALLY well done. If someone told me the actors were professional, I would have believed them. Logistics: TL is located one block from Gallery Place, which gave my son the opportunity to take the metro every day to/from TL. The class generally started late, which totally fit with my sons desire to sleep late in the mornings.

I took a comedy improv class here in 2016 and had a marvelous time. Renee Calarco is a great teacher and really helped me understand the fundamentals of improv.

I have been taking classes and participating in events with The Theatre Lab since 1996, when I took my first Drama Workshop class. It was great, it was hard, and it immediately made me stretch myself beyond my comfort zone, but among seriously talented people who were all doing the same thing. Without going through twenty years of my personal growth, my most recent Theatre Lab experience was being in the cast of Titanic, the Musical - when I saw they were going to do Titanic in the Creating a Muscal Role class, I made an appointment to audition for a major role. Ive done a lot of ensemble roles with Theatre Lab, but I knew Titanic would be special, so I enrolled in the class and went through the audition process to sing and read for a featured role. I thought I would make a good Captain Smith, so I even grew a beard to look as much like Captain Edward Smith as I could. During the audition, the director did read me for Smith, but she also read me for Joseph Bruce Ismay, the owner of the White Star Line. I was completely unaware of this character, but his lines were complex and interesting, and I began to realize how much I didnt know about this story. When the parts were assigned and announced, I had been cast as Ismay. Gone was my fantasy of playing the captain, but here was my real work - to become the owner of the Titanic. What a fantastic role it was, in so many ways. Afterwards, friends told me how great it was, and how much they hated me for being such a perfect bad guy - but I never once thought of Ismay as a bad guy, he was simply a level headed businessman who saw the world in terms of dollars and cents, schedules, and beating the competition. He expected the best out of himself, his ship, and the entire crew, so the moment he entered any scene everything changed. Ismay wanted answers, he wanted explanations, he wanted his expectations known and met. The stakes went up when Mr. Ismay appeared. I wanted people to understand Ismay, to relate to his view of reality, to see the world like he did. In fact, the entire point of Titanic as a show is to get the audience to care about these people - everyone knows what happened them. The Theatre Lab worked with the actors to make each passenger and crew members story so real, so personal, that the telling of a story about one ship continues to shock us to this day. My first instincts after the collision with the iceberg was to make Ismay almost hysterical, over the top, out of control - but the director taught me how those choices achieved the opposite effect, it diminished Ismays power, it reduced his stature, it negated his motives. He became just one more problem on a sinking ship. I had to learn to work against my own instincts and to keep the persona of Ismay intact and effective through the worst situation any of us could ever face. Playing Ismay was perhaps the greatest experience I have ever had in theatre, and I will never forget it. I thank The Theatre Lab, for allowing me the chance to be part of this amazing cast, and for teaching me how to tell an amazing story in the best possible way.

This was my first time at Theatre Lab. My instructor was Mr. Gabel. I was nervous at first but he made the class very fun and interesting each time . Hopefully I can take another class there when I have more time.
