My husband and I recently completed a package of dance lessons at the Hamby Ballroom Dance Studio. We adored our instructor, Dick, who was patient, kind, and made us laugh, all of which helped us relax and learn the proper dance steps. Over the course of 1.5 months, we got enough of the American foxtrot down to make the first dance look successful.Thank you, Dick and Suzanne!

I had taken several dance classes there and spent most of my precious time WATCHING Maureen and Brian catering to a couple there that had taken several lessons before. I also watched in utter disbelief and dismay Maureen fooling around with the female of this couple. They were dancing together having fun doing advanced and unrelated dance moves too much of the time. They had spent an inappropriately long time talking about unrelated topics (clothes, etc!) while I stood in disbelief and sadness that I wasnt learning the dance moves because the teachers were focusing on people that had spent more money there over time. *** It was like being at a dance and watching with envy wanting to dance like the people dancing were dancing. Hello?? That is why I took these lessons!!***When I had written Suzanne Hamby to complain- and tell her how much I would love to learn these steps-and how the teachers were just not spending an appropriate and effective amount of time teaching me- she wrote back You are a newcomer to the Sunday classes. Scott and Lindsay have been coming for years and are now quite good friends with Brian & Maureen. Since Scott and Lindsay have taken these classes so many times in the past, Brian and Maureen show them some advanced technique and arm styling to keep them interested. Otherwise the classes would be a bit too basic for themIs this any way to teach?? By showing more favoritism towards people that have spent more money and practically ignoring a newcomer?? Maybe I too, wouldve spent more money (I had already spent quite a bit- taking the 6 week classes over twice!) if I had been learning and the teaching was more effective and appropriate!

My husband and I have been taking weekly private couples lessons with Suzanne for over two years, and have been thoroughly impressed. When we first took dance lessons over 25 years ago, we thought our instructor was great. But after working with Suzanne we see what a truly gifted teacher can offer. She quickly figures out what we are doing wrong and offers good suggestions on how to fix mistakes. She doesnt just teach the motions of a step but goes into the body position, balance and technique that make it exceptional. Suzanne is patient when we repeat mistakes or demonstrate fish memory, and employs creative teaching techniques- when one approach doesnt resonate, she quickly changes tack to find one that does. She is very personable, professional and courteous, with a quick wit and sense of humor. We have a blast and laugh through each lesson. We highly recommend Suzanne Hamby to anyone wishing to begin learning ballroom dancing or improve dance technique.
