I love everything about their programming. It has brought out the rocker in my drummer. I would love for them to feature a Black artist in one or more of the bands in the fall.

My son has had a wonderful experience playing the electric guitar at camps and in private lessons @ SoR Silver Spring. The instructors work to create a positive, collaborative and encouraging environment for the kids. The kids have the opportunity to perform together at public venues and its always so inspiring to watch them.

The staff here are lovely. They were very friendly, encouraging and kind. My niece absolutely loved her time here. Watching her get excited about music was amazing. Though she is currently not taking classes anymore, I hope she’ll be able to in the future because watching her here was magic!

The easy going, rock n roll attitude is fun and welcoming. The classes for kids seem great. Though I haven’t been able to get my kids interested, I know of families with several musicians enrolled which I’m sure reinforces the learning and enthusiasm — and demonstrates the lure of SoR.

Signing my son up for the School of Rock Silver Spring when he was 10 has been one of the best moves we have made.I think what makes the School of Rock program so attractive to many students and parents is that it is performance-based. In addition to regular lessons, students have wonderful opportunities to rehearse as a band and play shows at public venues. This way, they not only learn how to play an instrument, but how to PERFORM. And they have fun doing it.I also like the fact that no matter your childs level of experience when starting out at the School of Rock, there is a learning track to give them what they need to succeed at their instrument of choice. From the Rock 101 program to the Performance Program to the advanced House Band program, the instructors and director offer up a diverse music catalog to push students skills to the next level. Most importantly, the staff is what makes the School of Rock Silver Spring so good. I can honestly say that all of the staff are passionate and care about what they do, and want to get the most out of the students in a positive, encouraging manner. As a parent, I have had the privilege of seeing the results...how many students have rapidly evolved from under-confident musicians to poised and skilled performers who take command of the stage. Its been nearly three years since my son started at the School of Rock Silver Spring and he has never looked back!

If you have seen the movie School of Rock with Jack Black, then you know how cool it is for kids to study rock music. This school has been a great investment for my sons in their development, both musically and socially. They have learned so much and have so much fun. They have gained new found discipline through practice, confidence as well as new friends that will last a lifetime. Studies have shown that music education directly correlates with academic success.Since joining in the last two years, my sons (ages 10 and 17) have performed at The Fillmore, at the Fountain in Silver Spring, and many other venues. School of Rock is their second home. Everyone, from the owners to the school director, music teachers, and staff is awesome!

I feel very lucky that my son is a part of the School of Rock Silver Spring program. My son is 10 years old, and he is rock drumming on stages in front of audiences (wow!). Have you checked out the YouTube videos? My son started drumming lessons at 7 and joined SOR at 8. The environment is very authentic and nurturing for young rock music-oriented kids. In the beginning, I had to encourage him to practice. And now, he sits down at his drum kit twice a day to practice, on his own initiative. Hes learning so much more than I can probably even imagine. Plus, theres the #cool factor. If youre considering this program, I highly encourage you to come into the studio on Colesville to meet the managers and instructors. Tell them Heather referred you, and maybe Ill get a free t-shirt!?!

Chris has been able to teach to where I am as a musician. To date I have not seen many adult students. I am pleased that there is something at SOR for me. As far as programs, I have not seen any beyond the individual lesson that apply to me. I enjoy the energy coming from the rooms where the kids are working on ensemble stuff.

I am an absolute beginner. I like that, within less than a month after my first lesson, I was all ready playing choruses and verses of Best songs.I am not a fast learner, and my progress has been a bit slow, but my instructor, Garrett, has been very patient and committed and has kept me inspired to keep striving to improve my skills.

School of Rock has been a great fit for me. Im a 5th grade teacher with limited free time and zero experience with keys- but the SOR teachers are kind, patient, skilled, and encouraging. I enjoy lessons each week and look forward to continuing a joy filled new hobby. Thanks School of Rock!

An update on this review to highlight how the Silver Spring School of Rock has taken cool to a new level!I have to agree with all the previous reviews about the Silver Spring School of Rock. As a parent, I see several qualities at this school that are absent from other schools. I want to provide details that fill in the gaps and help answer questions that I think all parents have in choosing a place to send their kids for instruction.First and foremost, what I witness at the school is that the management (Go Gia and Neel!!) and staff really care about the students. This care is more than just developing kids into musicians. They also care about the well-being of the kids as part of their school. I see management and staff interacting with kids to help them build their confidence and abilities, as well as to work with others. The school makes learning fun and turns kids into musicians people want to work with and not jerks. I sit across from one of the studio rooms while my son is in lessons and band practice. I have seen several instructors working with the kids and see passion and expressiveness in the instruction that motivates learning. Each instructor that I have witnessed has their own style that makes people feel relaxed and let the instruction sink in not just be received. That is, students feel the instruction and not just see it, which is an essential part of making music -playing without feeling or expression seems to miss the point of being a musician. The Silver Spring School of Rock gets that and it is an essential part of their approach. Each instructor also provides notes to parents and students covering the lesson and band practice. This is very helpful in guiding what needs to be done outside of class time -leaves kids with something to anchor to and not just remembering what needs to be done. There is always direct and regular feedback to refine skills.Second, it may go without saying, but the approach of participating in a band is a key feature. I wish I had this option when I was learning to play. Having a band practice component is more than just taking what is learned in a lesson and applying it. Playing with a band brings with it learning of how to connect with others in playing as a group. Without that part, playing with a band becomes just an exercise in making all the instruments sync-up. The staff absolutely have a good time with this and the kids certainly appear to enjoy it. The management and staff emphasize a subtle but important aspect of band practice, developing stage presence. This all shows a level of care in helping students be successful as performers as well as developing confidence in a young person in being different from others and not being afraid to do so. And what does this all lead to?..it leads to the management booking shows for these kids in some of coolest and famous venues in DC! The bands just played at The Black Cat in the U Street corridor! Playing at places like this for kids is huge deal in terms of crafting a program that is the real deal. What kid would not want to play in the actual venues they will be playing when they get out on their own? Finally, the environment. Again, Silver Spring gets it! The place is comfortable and not stuffy. It provides a feeling of getting together to enjoy the practice. It does not convey a feeling of a cold and buckle down environment of just wrote learning or something like a room for standardized test taking. The environment resembles an ideal place any band wants to practice in and spend time, not a dreary cinder block room absent of feeling and expression. Creating requires a conducive environment, and Silver Spring seems to recognize this. I like being there so much, I signed up for vocal lessons to compliment my geetar playing. If there a place that has perfected musical learning, the School of Rock must come the closest.... especially the Silver Spring location. They simply care. It is rare to find all the qualities present in any one thing to round out expectations... but that is the definition of exceptional.
