I have been training with Chris for over two years. I was initially just looking to improve my fitness and learn some basic self-defense. After my first class, I realized it was going to be something much more exciting and personally rewarding. It quickly became apparent that this was not a standard martial arts school with very little practical purpose. It’s a wide-ranging program comprised of different fighting styles that rollup into one comprehensive, real-world fighting toolkit.Chris is a great person and an amazing instructor. He is professional, calm, patient and very respectful of his students. He seamlessly works to reinforce existing skills while at the same time challenges students to push themselves to learn new things. I really enjoy training and I look forward to working with him every week. I currently train in Central Park on the Upper West Side. I highly recommend JKD NYC.

I highly recommend JKD NYC for individuals of all skill sets, to those just learning a fighting style to those advanced in other practices. It is worth attending one class, or just doing a trial private session with Chris to get a feel for his style and all the great things his program has to offer. You will not regret it!Chris is one of a kind. He not only trains his students in both the physical and technical requirements of JKD, but focuses on the mental side as well. He is also very humble, easy to get along with and creates a warm comforting environment for all of his students. I have been taking private sessions with Chris for close to two years now and it is what I look forward to most in my week. The fighting style itself is a common sense approach to fighting utilizing the best techniques and approaches from all different forms of fighting. It is a great workout, fun at the same time, and you learn some amazing practical skills that can be utilized in the real world! I cannot recommend it enough, and for those curious about JKD, it is worth just reaching out to Chris and he will happily introduce you to his approach!

Sifu Chris Moran is a phenomenal teacher.I came to JKD NYC after having trained in Thai boxing and MMA at several high level gyms in NYC and Long Island, and I was immediately hooked. Chriss teaching style, wealth of knowledge and positive attitude make his classes stand out from the rest. There are no big egos and the focus is always on learning new skills and improving old ones in a way that works for you as an individual.I have been taking group classes with JKD NYC for a year now and I would highly recommend them to people of all skill levels and backgrounds. If you are looking to learn mixed martial arts from a top-notch instructor, develop important self-defense skills and get in shape, this is the place for you.

Sifu Chris Moran is the G.O.A.T..In all seriousness, you dont learn one simple style here and you dont abide by a rigid methodology. You adopt various techniques from a variety of styles and work them into the intricacies of combat with just a few guiding core principles. No superiority complexes in anyone whos teaching (theyre all just people), however, you will be challenged because otherwise theres no point. Youll learn how to separate your confidence from your ego. 100% worth the time if youre going to commit. Going to this school and learning from everyone I train with here is one of my best life decisions.....And if youre worried about COVID, there are small classes with protected, limited contact.

Ive been training with Chris for several years now... and cant say enough about how well I think of him and the team hes built at JKD NYC.The content and focus is on practical skills that could be implemented to protect and defend in the unfortunate event that a confrontation cant be avoided... as well as on personal physical and mental development .In group classes, the environment hes cultivated is collegial and cooperative... everyone teaches each other and learns form each other and theres a sense of comrade that is priceless. For private training (now available in northern NJ!) it just couldnt get better. Not only is Chris a pleasure to work with, but I come away from every session feeling Ive learned or developed substantially that day.I just cant recommend Chris and his team highly enough.

I trained in multiple martial arts in my past and been training JKD for a few years now both in Midtown and UWS. What I like about the instructor Chris and JKD is that this is not some fancy or BS martial arts school. There is no Katas like in Karate and you’re not going to punch or kick in the air for an hour while making noises. Here you’re going to learn to be effective and learn how to defend yourself in a street fight no matter your size or attacker size - from a regular eye poke, stand up punching or kicking to elbows, knees, destructions, disarms and ground fighting. You’ll also learn to defend yourself from weapons like knives and sticks and how to better use them yourself. Bottom line this is as close as it gets to all around mixed martial arts! You’re also not going to just punch or kick some bag! Cause In real life you’re going to be hit back so classes usually include some component of sparring with different people so different sizes, techniques, speed and so on so in real life when you get in a fight and get hit you don’t freeze or don’t know what to do. We also simulate situations of 2 or 3 against one with and without weapons. So if you want to really learn to defend yourself then try a class and see for yourself.

One of my closest friends and college buddy who is also an instructor at the dojo recommended me to train with Sifu Chris Moran. I gotta say its one of the best decisions Ive ever made. Chris Moran is not only one of the leading martial artists in the world but also an amazing teacher. His instructions are direct, simple and it sticks like glue. Yes, starting out it may be overwhelming but I personally can guarantee you that in one year everything will fall into place and will work automatically. Just keep sparring and you will see the difference as time progresses. Even some of Chriss phase 2 students were really helpful in my journey. I remember this one dude who used to wait every Monday after class just to spar with me and help me get somewhere (its hard to find people like that in this busy city). Forever grateful to JKDNYC, to Sifu Chris Moran and to the people who have made me dangerously fit.

Ive been training at JKD NYC for a couple of months now and I can definitely say that its been a rewarding experience. Even though I was a beginner when I started, Chris and the rest of the team really took the time to make sure I understood what we were learning and its application. What really makes the school standout is the mindset: is what were learning effective for actually defending yourself? Chris really strives to teach what works and you learn whats practical in a fight whether its knife defense, standing up, or on the ground. Everyone at the school is nice too and are more than willing to stay with you after class to help you out with something youre struggling with. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to learn real self-defense, regardless of skill level, in a friendly, professional environment.

After being introduced to Kung Fu in Thailand, I was eager to find a teacher in NYC where I could continue to study martial arts. I went to many wonderful places and met a lot of skillful teachers but nothing resonated until I met Chris Moran who introduced me to Jeet Kune Do. As a yoga therapist who has studied yoga and eastern philosophy for years, this has proved to be the perfect compliment to my personal practice. Chris is the real deal and is a master teacher who is truly passionate about teaching the true essence of Jeet Kune Do. I am beyond impressed with his ability to analyze even the subtlest of movements to ensure that I am doing each technique safely and efficiently. Chris integrates the physical, mental, and emotional aspects into the trainings and everything you learn in class can be easily be applied in real situations. I feel so much stronger, resilient, and confident in all areas of my life since I have been training with Chris plus I have never felt safer walking the city streets! I have been training with Chris for over three years and have enjoyed both his low key style and immersing myself in practice of Jeet Kune Do. Having previously train in Kyokushin Karate years ago, I had a martial arts base, but was eager to study more practical and applicable street fighting techniques with less emphasis on forms and rote repetition. I certainly found that with Chris and the mixture of MMA, Kali, Wing Chun, weapons, Brazilian jujitsu and so many other techniques Chris teaches and JKD embodies. I relish feeling more confident and calm in any situation, knowing that I can defend myself and my family. Above all Chris is a great person, he is fun, humble, patient and inclusive. He doesn’t stand on ceremony, but certainly commands your respect. Additionally, in this new COVID environment, Chris has creatively continued to train whether it is over Zoom or meeting up in Central Park. Training with Chris is always a great workout and supplement to my other training. I look forward to continue to learn from Chris and absorb more of his knowledge in the years to come. They show you how to defend yourself while standing up or on the ground. The students are friendly and the teachers are very professional. It’s a total judgment free zone where everyone is there to learn and have fun while doing it. You can’t get a technique down? That’s fine, you can stay after class and either one of the teachers or a more experienced student will help. Wish I could give this place and Chris Moran more than 5 Stars.I’ve trained in many different marital arts in the past and was looking for a place to continue my training when I moved up to NYC. I joined JKD and was immediately hooked. Their approach to self-defense is always practical and Chris seems to always be thinking “does this really work”, which was extremely important to me. I didn’t want to join a gym that only does forms and light drills as this typically does not apply to real world scenarios. In NYC, even if you are the type of person to never pick a fight, you should be prepared for anything to happen and it is important to be capable of defending yourself. JKD NYC will teach you just that. I feel it is a welcoming place for all ages and has a strong sense of community.Chris truly believes in what he is teaching and will personally dedicate time to every individual student who is dedicated to learning and willing to put the time in. Chris as well as his Senior Instructors are extremely nice and patient, but will always push you to better yourself both in and outside of the gym.I’ve moved away from NYC and JKD, but will always carry a piece of it with me and appreciate everything Chris has done for me.

Wasnt sure what to expect when I showed up at the school/studio. When I first walked in all I saw was a room with gear, mirrors, and, a variety of students at all levels. The instructor (Chris) was younger than me and dressed in street-clothes. Sounds cliche - but this was one of those moments where you shouldnt judge a book by its cover. Chris Moran is wiser beyond his years and, is not only extremely skilled in JKD but, he really knows how to teach it. He understands the necessary steps for someone (unfamiliar with JKD) to learn and enjoy the art. Chris is what makes JKD NYC great. The students also deserve to be commended in making this school fantastic. The advanced students are very well versed and more than willing to help you improve your practice/experience.I was a beginner without any understanding or experience with JKD. After rowing competitively in college, working out just to stay in shape unfortunately did not motivate me. I tried several gyms and eventually really liked fitness boxing. However, 2 years ago when I moved back to NYC after being away for 17 years, I decided it was time to learn a real fighting art, in order to learn skills and feel as if I could protect myself. I cant express how happy I was to have found a place like JKD NYC. Going in, there were 2 things I was worried about. One: since I had never trained in any fighting art, I was worried I wouldnt find a place willing to train raw beginners. Two: being a woman, I was worried about training with men, as they could possibly be annoyed at having to train with a less strong person (I have experienced this in the past). None of this is true at JKD. Every person, no matter the skill level, treats every other person with respect and challenges them to become better. This is of course because the owner, Chris Moran, and the other amazing instructors (Cam and Evan) foster an atmosphere of friendly competitiveness. I have done a mixture of group and personal training sessions - sometimes even having to take a couple of months off because of work conflicts. I am always delighted to return and continue building my skills.

But even if you dont grasp the physical stuff swiftly, you will gain an in depth understanding of situational awareness while in turn developing your self awareness. You can find yourself training with the likes of actors, surgeons, Law Enforcement, dancers and guys training in MMA at times. This isnt a fitness trend or sport fighting, fitness gains just happen to be a bonus. I started at JKDNYC about a year ago, reaching out to Chris to help me with a specific fight style I had to learn for a movie. Since then, no matter what Ive requested, whatever style Ive come at him with, he done everything he can to accommodate with his team. If theres something theyre not 100% familiar with, the team are hungry to learn and go above and beyond to help.As well as Personal Training, I joined the group classes - the atmosphere is great. There is no hierarchy, I never felt intimidated or out of my depth and there is obviously such admiration and respect for Chris and his team, that this has made it a fantastic club and certainly the best Ive been to in NYC.

Ive trained in different martial arts but something was always missing - only stand up, only ground, only weapons...But then I found JKD and got hooked. This martial art and specific school combines every possible aspect of fighting - kickboxing, ground jiu- jitsu, wing Chung and locks, weapons both knife and stick, close quarters fighting, street fighting and different simulations of multiple attackers with or without weapons and more...I also like it since its not just practicing a punch or kick on a bag or doing a kata but rather real fighting!

Its hard to believe its been 3 years plus that Ive been training at jkd. Coming from no formal self defense background I can say I have learned and grown so much as a fighter and person. Sifu Chris Moran has deep understanding of the varying arts of jkd, and even better he is able to teach and communicate this well to students of all different levels in the same class. What also keeps me coming back is the friendly environment where everyone is eager to learn from one another, in safe no judgment zone. If you are looking for some well rounded skills in the martial arts that touches on everything I highly recommend JKD.

I cant stress enough how much I like this place. My friend and I have tried out a lot of different gyms, MMA or otherwise, and none have made me feel so welcome or so productive. Everyone is so NICE! People come up and introduce themselves to you and that has never happened at any other class Ive taken. I can really feel the community vibe and its a great motivator. So my previous MMA experience has been every variety of kickboxing, where you just punch a bag or punch the air. JKD is very different- you practice on each other, which is after all, the best way to learn. For the first time I had to develop defense reflexes and block punches. We even learned some basics in weapon combat. I definitely developed some self defense tactics and had a lot of fun boxing with my fellow classmates. Be aware that the room has no windows and is quite smelly upon first entering, but you get used to it quickly and then its just you, your gloves, and a friendly bunch of enthusiastic opponents. Cant wait to return!

Great Dojo!Ive lived in New York for 7 years and hadnt found a dojo I liked until I walked into JKD NYC last summer. Seifu Moran emphasizes practical, efficient and effective techniques in his curriculum and theres no obscure philosophy or ritualistic dogma that you have to endure to learn this beautiful art, just good common sense. And remember to leave your ego at the door. You dont walk into this place to beat up on your fellow studentsThe idea here seems to be that we all train together to grow together.Highly Recommended!

Ive been here for a year and six months now and with the help of Chris, Evans, Johnney, Cam and the rest of the staff at JKDNYC I feel very confident in my self defence skills. I highly recommend this school because of its proffesion staff, injury prevention and martial arts for the street tactics. Check it out and you wont be disappointed!

JKD NYC is a great place to study JKD. Sifu Chris Moran is extremely knowledgable and eager to share with his students. I really felt that he took the time to get to know me and my personal style and help me improve on areas that I specifically struggled with, while at the same time helping me to grow my strengths. The classes themselves are small enough that you will get individual attention and never feel like just a number in class, but also large enough that there are many different people to work with and learn from. There really is a family atmosphere at JKDNYC with everyone working together to raise each other up. Highly recommended if youre interested in martial arts, self defense, health and fitness, or just meeting good people.

Its ok but the place is too small to spar, the techniques are good and but when you try to call they wont answer, there was no receptionist when I was training over there I dont know now but I always had to be emailing or texting the sifu no talk. Im gonna be fair and give it three outta five good price but needs a little more communication.

For over a year, I bounced around different fitness/workout places trying out classes and courses. This was the first class that I both enjoyed, and felt like I was truly learning something. I joined and have been going to classes for over a year now. Its an excellent class that teaches you Jeet Kune Do, from the beginner/basic level to advanced. The instructors actually get to know you, and work with you personally. They know what level everyone in the class is, and will plan classes around the people that will be in each class, which is something that I truly appreciate. I cannot recommend this class more, Ive learned quite a bit and hope to learn even more in the next few years.

I have been studying with Chris for a little over two years now and feel incredibly grateful to have found his studio when I did. As a Phase II student, I now have the opportunity to assist the staff in teaching and in doing so Ive been able to see just how much time, effort, and care Chris and the other instructors put into making this a studio Bruce would be proud of. Jeet Kune Do has a wide range of possible benefits; from self expression, to exercise, to self empowerment- but first and foremost it is a form of self defense. With that in mind, students start controlled sparring with each other and with the staff from day one. That may sound a little intense, however, because Chris fosters such a supportive environment among the students and staff alike, (largely in part by insisting egos be left at the door) I have never seen anyone leave with a serious injury, or so much as cry in the two years that I have been there. That is no small feat for a martial arts studio. To be clear, if you train here and give it your all you will leave exhausted, you will be sore the next day, and you may have some bruises, but you will be proud of yourself and your classmates and will have entered into a very loving community of people who excited to watch you grow as a martial artist and a person. I highly encourage anyone who is considering trying out martial arts, or continuing their studies, to pay JKD NYC a visit and see for themselves what a great studio it is.

Been a student of JKD NYC for just under a year and Im completely hooked! Its not a sport like MMA but a amazing are born from the mind of Bruce Lee on the streets of HK. Youll definitely get your work out, the group is absolutely amazing, and were always eager to work with new students and current students to help improve skills... Did i mention that Sifu Chris is the man?!?

I have been with Sifu Chris and JKD NYC for about 2 years and I can honestly say that the experience has been excellent and transformative. I had a prior background in judo, and work in law enforcement, and I wanted to explore a martial art with a strong striking component that was flexible enough to complement the skills I already had. I have learned more than I ever thought possible and am still learning. It has been an excellent experience that I would recommend to anyone regardless of their skill level or background. Chris, one of the most accomplished JKD practitioners in the New York area and the country, embodies the principles of JKD. An excellent teacher and a martial artist in the true sense of the word, his style of teaching is as unpretentious and results-oriented as the art itself; it is not a show, a contest, or a crisp uniform beauty pageant, the goal is to improve your technique, skills, and attributes to be as effective as humanly possible and have fun along the way. He is patient, thorough, and ensures that his students understand the principles behind the techniques as well as how and when to apply them. From the first class or private lesson it becomes instantly clear that this man knows what he is doing, and if you listen to what he has to say and practice what he shows you, you will be more than able to hold your own in any physical encounter no matter where you started. With the system that Chris teaches, and how he and his staff teach it, you will feel stronger, faster, more balanced and precise in your movements and over time strongly confident in your ability to immediately stop an assailant’s attack dead in its tracks and make the attacker pay for it. He and his staff are relaxed but efficient, skilled yet humble, pretty much exactly what JKD is. You will know it when you see it, and you will enjoy it. And frankly, regardless of what you might look like on the outside, over time you will be someone whom it would be a very, very big mistake to mess with. Fear and uncertainty create danger; if you are confident in your ability to defend yourself, you often won’t have to. You will exude that confidence because you see it in the students and teachers every day you come to class and feel it grow a little stronger every time you leave. You will learn to box, you will learn to kick, you will learn to stop and intercept attacks, to throw and grapple, to lock joints and trap. You will learn to use and defend against a stick, a knife, and multiple attackers. You will learn all of this, and you will learn to do it calmly and efficiently. I didn’t think it was possible when I saw one of the senior staff go through it my first day, but today I know it is possible. And trust me, it’s not only fun, it’s a good feeling to watch your ability to do these things grow and to know you can do it. Attacks on the street just dont seem quite as intimidating when you see them come twice as fast and stop them dead three different ways in class a few times a week. Predators do not want to mess with that level of skill or confidence. Try it out, you wont be sorry.

I started at JKDNYC as a total beginner, and have been going for over a year now. Through their persistant patience and attention to detail, Sifu Chris and his experienced instructors have helped me grow immensely - both physically and mentally. Even I didnt expect to see such an increase of confidence, awareness, stamina, and even calmness in myself when I first began. All martial arts benefit the body and the mind, but Bruce Lees focus on diversity and efficiency makes Jeet Kune Do ideal for our modern society. At JKDNYC we learn the core ranges of combat, then work on flowing between them until they become fluid and second nature. To be like water, as Bruce used to say.My favorite aspect of JKDNYC is that there are no egos. Everyone is here to become the best version of themselves - and to push you to do the same. We joke often, and laugh a lot, but when its time work, everyone gives it their all. We improve ourselves through improving each other. What could be more rewarding than that?

I have been training under Sifu Chris Moran for about 4mos now and loving every moment of it. I have been learning martial arts and also improving my cardio. I have taken martial arts classes before but was not as impressed by the instructors as much as I am with Sifu Chris. He is very calm and definitely not a show-off. He does a great job at explaining techniques and taking extra time to explain it if you are having issues with it. The classes are small which makes it for more personal attention. By his teaching and demeanor, one can quickly tell that he actually cares about what he is teaching and he is very passionate about it. This is not a McDojo! He is the REAL thing.

Ive been training in NYC for almost a decade at various JKD, Wing Chun and Kali/Escrima schools. From big flashy training facilities to one on one with mysifu under a tree on the east river. JKDNYC falls in the middle in the best way.The space is modest, but the instruction and personal attention from Sifu Chrisare stellar. Ive actually seen him take notes on particular students and have nodoubt he personalizes each students direction as a result of this observation. His PFSbrand of JKD is geared towards efficiency and quick results. Besides the usabilityof this art, Sifu Chris delivery is humble and sincere. HIs character sets the examplefor a school in which the students help each other along rather than compete with each other. Very refreshing. All are welcome!

Growing up in Jamaica, Queens was very hard and tough. I always wanted to learn self defense but just never had the time. So when I did, I researched a few different martial arts. I figured Bruce lee is the best fighter in the world so why not take his style which is Jeet Kune Do. So I came across Sifu Chris and had to search no more. After my 1st class I felt that I learned more than I knew about fighting in my whole life. I wasnt flexible, didnt know how to throw a jab, and cross. I was just not where I needed to be as far as being able to protect myself. So I continued to take his class as much as he would allow me to. After a full year with him and with over 50 hrs of private training by him, I can say that I am in the best shape of my life and can now protect me and my family. By just sitting and talking with him you can learn so much. I jus watch him and study him and just so amazed how he can take someone with no experience and fix them up so fast. We have females in our class and they are nothing to play around with. I got my girlfriend to join and she has also been trying to make every class possible. We spar in class with his supervision and this allows us to actually see what will work and what will not work. I love how he allows us to seek answers for ourselves and just allows us to try and explore different things. While making sure we fully understand to use what is useful and to disregard what is not. I wish I would have started years ago but I am 1 year in with him and cant wait to see what I look like in 3-5 years.I promise after your 1st trial free class, you will also be hooked and ready to become a martial artist.

MMA is not self-defense, its a sport. On the other hands, Jeet Kune Do was born for street from Bruce Lee. (This is my personal opinion)This gym is a great workout and self-defense class. For example, elbow throwing, you need to use your whole body to throw it Sifu Chris always says that. As you throwing your elbow, you actually workout your core as well. This is just one of the examples. We are doing self-defense movement, at same time, it could be a nice workout as well. No one will stay dry after the class.I have been done for few years now. By studying under Sifu Chris, he tries to improve the teaching method each year, so that it will be easy for new students to understand the PFS concept.I feel it is worth it! You should try this out!!

It can only take a first free class at jkdnyc, so you ll get hooked up with art of Jeet Kune Do, The Instructor Chris Moran makes all the tools available to his students in such practical and simple way .My own experience with Sifu Chris that I remember when I walked in to his class, it was not much than a curiosity because I kind of felt old, I was 46 ys back then . So being nervous and stiff, Chris came to me and handed a foam stick and start showing me the basic angles and said : just relax, it will all come to you . so after few minutes, I could follow easily the pace of the class, and I felt good about myself, so I realize its not the age that matters, but what matters is what do you train? and who trains you? Here I am now 2 years later becoming somebody else that wasnt 2 years ago.Good stamina, high self confidence, and a fighter that I never imagined I would be.All I can say that martial art was for me a curiosity that turned to a habit, and habit that turned to a passion. and thats my Experience with Sifu Chris at JKDNYC
