I was a student at protégé, I have unenrolled in the school because of how I was treated. I lost my dad at the beginning on May and was at school when I found out. I left the school telling the instructor what happened. that same day I called the school 3 times to try to speak with the administrators about taking some time off, after being told they were too busy to talk I finally got a TEXT 3 days later saying I can go on leave. When I come back I go into to office to explain to the admin I would still be going to therapy once a week. His response was that I should cancel my appointments or take another leave. Needless to say I left. The school is a family ran business that has no respect for students. Instructors will tell students to look up videos on YouTube when asking how to do something. The instructors might be amazing at doing hair but not teaching it. I would not recommend this school to anyone.

I got a root touchup by them and after washing my hair discovered the root touchup does not match the rest of my hair… I called them to have it fixed and they said because of a seven day return policy they can’t fix my hair without me paying for it… Which is absolutely ridiculous to me. If they did not match the color of my hair correctly I should not have to pay them to fix it. Will not be going back.

I had gone to get my hair cut there a couple of times with no issues. Today I went to go in to get my hair dyed. Scheduled at 10am. They called me yesterday to get me in at 8:30. I waited in the parking lot for almost 2 hours and no one showed up even for my 10 am appointment. Id hope that they would be training these hairdressers to be professional but missing an appointment thats been scheduled for weeks is unacceptable.

I live in Ovid and drove to Lansing to get my hair done. I called beforehand to see how much a perm would be and I was quoted $45 to start. I told them what kind of curls I wanted and how long my hair was so as to receive an accurate quote. The person I talked to explained that perms start at $45 and goes up from there. I told them I wanted to spend around $60 and they said that was fine. Sounded good to me so I went ahead and made an appointment. When I went in for my appointment, I was asked what service I wanted done and I told them I was here for a perm. No mention of price was given so I assumed all was well. Once I was seated and draped, ready to go when an instructor came over and told me she would go get a price quote for me. Okay, no big deal. Its a cosmetology school so I get it. Then the instructor comes back and proceeds to tell me that if it takes over an hour to wrap my hair that theyll have to charge me double, totaling $90. She explained to me that the $45 I was told about on the phone was actually an hourly rate. NOBODY explained this to me prior to coming in. Why couldnt they have told me that over the phone so I didnt have to waste my time and gas to come in for a service that I possibly couldnt afford. Very dissatisfied with their professionalism and how they conduct business. I will not be returning.

I absolutely love coming to this place to get my hair done!! They were the first place to ever highlight my hair, and I would definitely recommend coming here. The service is very well, everyone is so nice when you walk through the door. As well as the students who the haircuts and the coloring!! If you are looking for a place to get your hair done at a good price and for it to come out very well, I highly recommend this place!!

I have had 5 or 6 perms done with all different people. Each stylist has done a great job. They have all been very professional and likable personalities. Most of the employees have already graduated now. All except Molly L., I was there on September 9th, for another perm and cut. She graduates soon. The experience with Molly was so enjoyable, I hated to have to leave! What a wonderful young lady. The best part of this whole experience for me, is this. I have crippling arthritis in my hands. Very difficult to dry, style my hair. The perm and cut that Molly L. gave me, to my surprise when I wake up in the morning my hair is great! I run my fingers through it before leaving the bedroom, ready for they day!! Molly L. Im so very pleased, happy and fortunate to have had you do my hair! If this is how you do all your customers; you are in for a very large following, where ever you end up! Im an old lady and you made my life so much easier! Thank you so very much.

This is a horrible school. Very insensitive owners and workers. They are a business first and only looking to make money and don’t care about their students’ learning or the students’ well being. This place is owned by a husband and wife team and their son is the financial aid director. Due to covid many students are struggling to finish school and they will not let the students out of their contracts. The owner himself told me today that their are other options such as buying a house there or stay at a hotel or motel until the students are finished with school. Covid is nobody’s fault but they are so worried about making money and staying afloat they are willing to drive their students to debt, and the ground so they can get their money. Instructors are rude and immature as well. They care about money not whether you learn or grow. I would not recommend this place ever.

I cant tell you enough how much I enjoyed my experience at Protege! Jennifer V. gave me the best haircut that I have ever had. You can tell that she genuinely enjoys what she does and has a passion for it. The instructor was extremely nice and made sure that I loved my new haircut and highlights. Protege is truly amazing!

As male, that been coming here for a while, it hit or miss when it comes to mens haircuts as a beauty school from various students. I say these students are more focused on womens haircut in all fairness. But there are times when I get a decent haircut. The reason for the one star is the fact, that they change things like prices and the fact I had one time when a student walk away from my haircut because I ask her a question and the supervisor saw it and did nothing! But I still come here for a very reasonable haircut! I guess you get what you pay for!

I have never gotten my hair done professionally so I decided to finally pamper myself. I set an appointment, went and sat there 40 minutes before I ended up asking why I hadnt been seen yet. Long story short, I had to reschedule. Then I was woken up that rescheduled day by them calling that morning asking if I could come in an hour earlier to make sure they had enough time. I did. This apparently was not enough time still because two of them started quickly working on my hair. They did not leave the dye and everything in as long as they were supposed to. My deep conditioning was rushed as well. They were all gathering up their stuff to leave while one of the older students cut my hair. The cut took literally 1-2 minutes. I went home with blue everywhere including all around the collar of my shirt. My hair was not cut well and it is certainly not deep conditioned. I am extremely irritated. They were extremely unprofessional. I would have rated them a 1 but the main girl doing my hair saved them a bit by being so understanding and trying to stand up for me not getting what I want. She was being rushed to do her job. Other than her, it was a disaster and a massive waste of my time and money.

I had a senior stylist named Larissa and she was fantastic. She was so nice and I was exhausted at my appointment and she noticed and was really considerate. However, I went from blonde to brown an the front of my hair got a little too dark, so they told me to come back and they would fix it free of charge. Over all a great experience, even though there was a minor mess up. Larissa is awesome!

I loved my appointment with Katelyn Baker my hair stylist. She was so informative and well trained. The instructors are also friendly and know their trade. I recommend Protege Academy abd will definitely go there again. 5 stars! :)

The staff was friendly, attentive and they were very accommodating towards our groupon. But I just didnt like the end result. One of the instructors helped me make an appointment to fix the color free of charge and I did however Im going to be cancelling it. Im sure for haircuts theyre great.

I have gone here a few times now, I always schedule to have Olivia Moreau do my hair. She is sweet and gentle with your hair and checks to see if everything is okay during. She is easy to talk to and always makes sure to understand what you want first. I highly recommend scheduling an appointment with her.

Ive gone here twice - once for prom hair (waterfall braid to the side and then curled), and the next time to get my hair, that was down to my butt, chopped into a bob. Both times they did an amazing job! Like any other salon, you need to be precise with what you want and make sure theyre doing it how you want as they go through- they cant read your mind, which is something a lot of people dont realize and then blame it on the stylist. Anyways, if you communicate with your stylist throughout it they are more than happy to make adjustments, its all part of the learning experience for them! I will warn, if youre trying to get in and out quick its not the place to go because chances are it will take them a while longer than an experienced stylist. But if you want to save money and have a great, relaxing experience at a professional feeling salon, this is the place to go!

I went today because I desperately needed a haircut, & a Groupon was available, so I figured, why not? Boy, am I glad I went. My stylist was Maddie, who was excellent! She listened to what I wanted, made suggestions, & explained everything as she went along. The outcome was so much better than I expected ( I have hairdresser anxiety due to many bad experiences). My curls are shiny & happy. Thank you Protege Academy, for training a fine stylist, & for being a classy, professional salon. I will be back!

Had my daughters hair cut done here. Some guy I think his name was Joe... took over a hour and a half for a trim and it was completely uneven. I had to fix it. We will Never come back.

Went for a coupled manicure and pedicure, and my nail tech Samantha was awesome!! Service was so great I booked a hair appointment with ArReon the very next day and she slayed!! Prices were decent and staff very professional.

To say I’m disappointed is an understatement. Had an updo appointment scheduled for a wedding I’m standing in. Didn’t find out until I got there that morning that they had to cancel my updo appointment due to a wedding party coming in, and being short staffed. They claimed they called me the day before to inform me of this, but I have no records of them calling to let me know. Needless to say I will not be returning, nor do a recommend anyone to get services from them. Especially, if you are trusting them with your time that is valuable as your best friend gets married.

Protégé is an awesome school with great students and instructors. Ive come here for cuts, color, nails, you name it, and Ive never been disappointed! Their prices fit the budget, and there is always someone available to get me in anytime! You have to come in knowing it is a school and the services take longer than in a professional salon, but youre helping the students grow and thats why I keep coming back!

I was here for 3 hours, first time I had ever gotten my hair done. It was so worth it. I got full highlights, the girl who did my hair did a great job. I got a coupon from Groupon and paid $30Update: 9/7/2017 Went back to Protege for a cut and dye and I had a wonderful experience, the ladies here are professional, and understanding of what the costumer is looking for.

The stylist that did my hair was very professional so I cant blame her for how my hair turned out. The instructors there are the ones that tell her what colors to do. They told me they would try to get my color the way I wanted. Color didnt turn out and they told me to come back in 2 weeks. Bleached my hair again. Didnt work the second time either. Now my hair is black,orange, and blonde. Not even close to what I wanted at all. My hair is down to the middle of my back and I will probably have to get it cut into a bob because they totally ruined my hair. I have never had anyone or myself do as much damage to my hair as they have.

I absolutely LOVE this school! Melisa is the intro instructor and she has been amazing! I feel like she has went above and beyond to teach us and get us ready to go out on the floor... I have the upmost respect for the owner of the school, Lynn, she tries her hardest to get to know each individual student here! I feel like I am a part of a huge family here! We have great prices and amazing products here. We use top quality tools. We are a TIGI school and I am proud to be a part of it! I feel so confident in my abilities and am thinking about taking an instructor course here. I cannot express how amazing this school is! I have been wanting to do an all over highlight in my hair for so long but was unwilling, or unable to, spend $120 minimum at a salon to get the look I wanted. Ithe was suggested that I try Protégé Academy to cut cost, so booked an appointment to try it out. I was hooked up with Sage, and after a consult with her and showing her the pictures of the look I was going for, she set to work. The end result was absolutely awesome! I love my hair, and loved my experience with Sage as well! Great experience, and at half the cost too!

Im new in town and have been to many schools back home. This was the most unprofessional place I have ever been too. I do not even think that they teach here. the teachers seemed more concerned with taking pictures and money than teaching the students. The students were more concerned with leaving and not having to be there than learning.I went in to get my roots matched with my blond hair. I left 4 hours later and $60 less in my pocket wearing my hat. I have black 1 1/2 inch roots.There is a line where the black stops in my hair. I am going to have to go some where are get it fixed. Not one instructor looked at what the girl was doing with the color in my hair until it was too late and then a cute little blonde instructor came & she did not even know what she was doing to fix my hair because it is not Any better than what it was. My scalp was numb from all the bleach they used and my hair is now frizzy dry and I do not think anyone will take me seriously in the world because I look Like I belong on the street.The worst thing is, I did not see anyone doing color on any one in the shop. all I saw was haircuts and curl setting.LESSON LEARNED, Just take my advice and go somewhere else.THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING HERE. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR HAIR ON YOUR HEAD. THIS PLACE SHOULD BE CLOSED DOWN. LETS MAKE THAT HAPPEN BY NOT GOING.

I have been there a couple of time which was not as bad as my recent experience. I had ask the girl for a specific color, but seems she was not paying attention. Not only that but she was unprofessional. As toward the end when she took me to the front desk she stood there until I paid and she then had the guts to ask for a tip.(which I alway happen to leave a tip regardless who the student is)Anyhow, I have been recommended this place to so many people brought so much business to protégé but this was it for me. Not going back there again.May 2019What a nightmare, i know i decided not to go back and i should have stayed strong. Went to get a all over color, walked out with highlights, which was not what i expected, i was told it can be fixed......bad idea 🙉 should not have gone back for a correction.

Both of the daytime instructors was rude unprofessional totally unhelpful although I did like the student who did my hair she was awesome her name was Ar’Reon and then the receptionist Kika Who should definitely be an instructor because she’s the one that help pick out my color was just amazing

I have had my hair done twice by Corin here & Ive been impressed both times! She is extremely professional & talented, especially with coloring hair! She helped me pull off a purple, blue & teal color melt that lasted for almost two months with minimal fading that I was so pleased with. I would highly recommend Corin & Protege for anyone in the area looking to try something new with their hair or just looking for a trim! The learning process that takes place is also super interesting as a client, and both instructors & students are very knowledgable and willing to explain exactly what they are doing & make sure you are happy with the results!

Sat for an hour and a half while this chick who probably never held clippers before attempted to give me a fade. Very disappointed by the instructors lack of guidance or intervention. Left this place in tears with patches and an uneven/unfinished haircut. Never going back.

I dont recommend them to anyone, The whole company and their policys are a complete joke, People they have doing hair are called senior students just for showing up to class enough and not their actual skill. Mens high and tight took an hour and 15 mins to do with lots of mistakes and the instructor practically doing it all ( Didnt Know senior student meant completely oblivious ) and my g/f got a perm that wasnt done right ( doesnt look permed at all, more like she took a cheap crimper to diff spots of her hair ) and the company only gives you a couple days to come back or you cant get a refund or have anything redone. Doesnt matter if you live 100 miles away and have other work priorities as is our problem. I DONT RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE, SAVE YOUR MONEY! I dont believe you can even get a proper education there at the rate the students progress was.
