My 12-year-old daughter has been training with Oom Yung Doe for almost two years now. She informed us recently that her focus on academics and her energy for extracurricular activities are all due to her training with Oom Yung Doe. My husband and I are grateful to Will and Danielle and also to the other instructors from other locations and regional instructors who have given their time to help and share their lessons with our daughter. When I was looking for a martial arts school for her two years ago, my goal was to find a school that can help give her confidence after experiencing some challenges in middle school. I checked other schools in the area and noticed that most schools were focusing much on strength, self-defense, self-discipline, perseverance, and confidence but not so much to train the body and mind to learn about self-worth, kindness, and respect not only for ones self but to her peers. From the moment she had her first visit the focused has never been about achieving a black belt but achieving a life based on values. Our family feels fortunate to have found a safe and supportive school for her to grow and be part of a community where she is accepted no matter where she is.

Very supportive and positive environment for both my son and daughter. It is both challenging and fun for them to learn various martial arts styles. It has given them both confidence to gain discipline and strength.

I started out looking into Oom yung doe to find a way to work out and learn something new but, I found so much more than I expected. It is challenging but also so much fun! You do everything based on your own ability. There are so many different people from all walks of life and at different ages and stages of their lives involved in it. They are really why I enjoy it so much. It is an amazing experience to be surrounded by passionate people all trying to improve, not only their bodies but also their minds. We all have only one body and mind so why not take the time to try and improve both. You will learn to strengthen every single little part of yourself both physically and mentally. The instructors are also amazing! They are extremely patient and flexible with teaching you. They are constantly helping you improve and teaching new things so that everyone can learn. Even if you need them to repeat the same thing over and over, they will gladly do it.Ultimately, it is an amazing group of people and, you will have a lot of fun while improving yourself. If you are reading this review, you are at least somewhat interested in it so why not take the next step and talk to someone about it! You could keep saying one day or this could be your day one! You can decide that for yourself!

I cannot recommend Oom Yung Doe highly enough! Before I began this practice I was, by all accounts, living a perfectly healthy and well-rounded life style.. or so I thought. The moment I began practicing Oom Yung Doe, my quality of sleep, appetite, relationships, and overall well being was much improved, in ways that I did not even know could be improved. I had no idea that I was previously not living my fullest lifestyle, and now I cannot imagine ever living any other way. Head Instructor Will and Assistant Head Instructor Danielle are two extraordinarily knowledgable and talented teachers in Oom Yung Doe, and they have created a safe space which accommodates all levels, ages, body types, abilities, and martial arts aspirations. I encourage everyone to try a class and see how it can change your life in ways you least expect!

The best workout you could ever treat yourself to! Its amazing how quickly you can transform yourself (and how fast I broke a sweat just holding the positions). Mindfulness and stress management, breathing exercises, building strength.. if you enjoy yoga, or maybe want to learn great self defense tactics, or just want to switch up your routine- this may be a great change of pace. For myself, running was not as engaging with my mind as I had required. Im glad I ended up here.Come visit a local school and see if its right for you!

Instructor Danielle and Will are very flexible and willing to work with your changing schedule. The lessons are professional and you get a lot out of them. I hadnt done any serious exercise in a while and found the lessons challenging but not overly grueling. Ive already seen improvements in my physical health. I definitely suggest anyone coming in to try a lesson!

As an acupuncturist, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of a high quality movement practice, something that is rare to find and that Oom Yung Doe truly provides. The instructors are able to offer individualized recommendations to support every body type, including those suffering from various illnesses or injuries. I strongly recommend trying out their classes to not only benefit your fitness but your health and longevity as well.

The training has done wonders for my flexibility and strength in my lower, middle, and upper body. I used to wake up with lower back pain, which is now gone. In just one year I can see a difference in how my body moves, which still doesnt compare to how my instructors can move. One thing that resonates with me is something that an instructor said recently, No matter how impressive or strong a higher belt is, you can achieve that too. Remember that even they started out where you did, as a white belt. There is a community feel to the school, and everyone is trying to improve themselves together, in a motivating environment. Highly recommend this school if you are looking to gain strength, flexibility, or self defense skills.

I had wanted to try martial arts for many years but only recently took the plunge, googling my way to a highly rated school nearby, Oom Yung Doe in West Cambridge. OYD, developed over centuries, integrates 8 martial arts. It’s designed to help each student gain broad exposure but also eventually specialize in a way that’s tailored to an individual’s needs and body. Think of OYD as cross training. “Balance” is a word you hear often. Mind vs. body. Hard strikes vs. soft fluid movements. Upper vs. lower body. Improving joint and tendon as well as muscle strength. While each lesson tends to focus on a single martial art, it usually has the same progression: deep breathing, warmup/conditioning, movement, and self-defense, the latter two interrelated. At the end of each class, the instructor gives the technique du jour more context with a brief anecdote or history lesson. Head Instructor Will and Assistant Head Instructor Danielle are awesome. Even in the context of group classes, there’s a lot of individual instruction and tailoring of activities to students at different levels of development. To help you along, they regularly invite regional and national experts to observe classes and offer advice.OYD in West Cambridge is challenging but surprisingly low-key. Will and Danielle are like most good teachers: they challenge you but are also quite encouraging. Students, men and women, range in age and are quite supportive and collaborative. More advanced students guide beginners. There are both youth and adult programs. At first, I wondered if the atmosphere would be hard-core, emphasizing a lot of sparring. That’s not the deal here. The emphasis is on developing more physical and mental strength, balance, fluidity, coordination and resilience. All these things – coupled with practiced technique - are essential to defending yourself, but they continually remind you that these are building blocks for the more commonplace goal of living a healthy, fulfilling life.

The first thing I want to say is Oom Yung Doe is a blast to do! Its fun, incredibly challenging and the conditioning benefits are off the charts. Oom Yung Doe is 8 different martial arts taught in a seamless and cumulative manner. Class is offered 6 times a week with two different times a day to choose from. This is an intact, chi (energetic) martial arts system based on a tradition of principles that help develop, rebalance and heal what ails you.I’m in my early 60’s. Ive been attending Oom Yung Doe for 6 and a half months. I’m in awe that decades old injuries which have limited any kind of deep conditioning activities are resolving.Head Instructor Will and Assistant Head Instructor Danielle are awesome! They are impeccably well trained and passionate. Its inspiring to watch them work to improve and evolve their own practices. They are patient and effective teachers and their efforts are reflected in the progress of all of their students. My fellow students make this program very special. We are all kinds of people, from all different walks of life and ages. We work and train together with respect and great fellowship. My fellow students, most simple said, are wonderful people to be around!Doesn’t matter if you’re an elder, a young lion, lioness or little cub- you will get challenged and rewarded in ways you can’t even begin to imagine.Seriously worth checking out and taking advantage of!

I have been doing the Pal-ge movements that I learned at Oom Yung Doe Cambridge/Watertown for about a year. I had been suffering from lower back pain for the previous couple of years due to a bike accident. The movements, which I have done pretty consistently, have reduced my pain by at least 50 %. I was able to ride in the Pan Mass Challenge bike fundraiser this summer, something that I never thouht I would do again. Aside from the pain reduction, I feel stronger in my body, more grounded and more centered in my life. This martial arts discipline has proved a powerful way for me to gain health, strength and well being.
