I was with my granddaughter and I shared with her that the building use to be a theater. In the 1970s is was can food distribution and the ceiling was beautiful then. It became smart and final with that same beautiful look. And now it is the 99 cent store and they have kept the ceiling and balcony just as beautiful. The store was well organized and I enjoyed my trip there, the vegetables was looking great and I also shared this information with clerk and she was truly surprised.

The only thing that I dont like about this place is that not everything is 99 cents. Most things are, but occasionally there are things that can cost up to $4.99. Oh well, the trade off is that this store stocks a wider array of items in a more diverse range than most dollar stores, but it still didnt have a cranberry juice type drink when I went there last night. Nonetheless, the inventory changes constantly.

Everything was going fine until I got to the cash register. The clerk told me to take everything from the basket out. I had 20 candle and took 1 out and told the clerk I had 20 she still went and counted which I am a paying customer and what I am telling her I have. Right when I was heading out she tells me that I can’t take the basket out. My husband and told her that we were waiting for my sister in law next lane. She took it as we were talking rude which if I was rude I would of made a scene and asked for her manager. I was in aisle 2 and it just happened 10 mins ago I don’t plan to come back here been to other stores and have better customer service. She needs to not take clients comments personal.

They have some great 99-cent items there plus I like looking up at the ceiling the building used to be a Nickelodeon theater 60 years or so ago still has the ceiling and the balcony I like to know more historical information about it. ?

I love this store but lately they have not had many grocery carts. I am an older person and carrying two hand carts around through the store full of my purchases is very hard. I sure hope you get more carts soon!

Seasonal decorations are great to get here, everyday snacks (chips, cookies, candies), and juices are plenty! Staff are nice when you need a question answered. Youll run into long times at times as sometimes there will be a couple staff checking out on the counter. On occasions, youll have panhandlers hanging around or inside the store.

This is my secret happy space..so if with sniffles or a poor attitude, go to whole foods down the street.. the food options change 3x a week...

Had what I went for, plus, a very bizarre dollar store experience! --- in an old theatre or something --- there is an ornamental Greek theatre style ceiling dotted with helium happy face and birthday balloons. The remnants of a balcony makes it feel like we, who are shopping, are in fact the performers. Would be suitable for a David Lynch movie. The main detractors are the heat, the lack of music, and the whirring motor of something from above, but then again, it adds an eerie ominous feeling to the dollar store experience, so I wouldnt change it.

Wow, we have been coming here almost weekly for years, but yesterday (10/11/18) it was drastically changed. Can you tell us what’s going on? It seemed like there were many fewer items like stationery, drugs and plastic items, and much more soda, chips, etc. Are the Chinese tariffs affecting your ability to stock a variety of things?

They have some Great deals &a produce section as well.if you see something you love,grab it,stuff sells out at a great price and some items are not always available. The lines can be a bit of a pain,but generally the staff is quick and helpfully. Lots of seasonal decorations (covering most holidays)

Its a 99¢ store, so theres not all that much to say. Its house in a cool old building which used to be a theater, which is nice to look at. Staff always seem on edge, place isnt overly clean but it has a lot of good staples at a very low price. Can be fun to see what weird/unusual things you can find here. A lot nicer than the West Oakland location for sure

What you want - huh? No it aint Berkeley Bowl, Whole Foods, or even Safeway, its a cheap place to find food, household cleaners, even party items, no, no alcohol. But in this pandemic it sure helps out

I always have a good time going in there. Most of the time they have everything that Im looking. Cleaning supplies games for the kids coloring books color crayons random stuff even if Im looking for a snacks to take to the movie they have it. Starting to have more fresh vegetables and fruit, and even fresher fruit to grow.

This store has great deals. It recently got restructured, things got moved around after years of being the same. I love that its in an old theatre. If youve never been ir never noticed before, next time you go in look up. The ceiling is awesome.

Almost everything in here is a great deal. Definitely worth popping in to see if they have what you want. NOT worth buying anything if the line is long though. I feel like the lines have been getting longer over the last year, especially evenings and all day on the weekends.

Its one of the better 99 cent stores in the area. Selection of basic items is decent most of the time and you can sometimes find exceptional deals. The fresh fruit and vegetables section is small but you can always drive to Berkeley Bowl if you need something in particular.

Lots of nice stuff for cheap. They even have produce! Go-to place for those on a budget. They have a wide selection of things, some of which are name brand. This location also has a beautiful ceiling that convinces me that it used to be an auditorium or church of some sort. The store can be a bit grungy and smell like urine, but it is a treasure trove of goodies if youre willing to look past it.

I always do like going shopping at this store BUT the only complaint I have is the staff r not very friendly AT ALL. They r not helpful wut so ever, they just want u 2 get wut u need and get the hell outta the store.

They have a public bathroom, but locked; an attendant must let you in, and sometime that takes a loooong time. Surprisingly good selection of frozen &canned foods. Pro tip: canned coffee drinks 2/$1. Good!

This store has a good selection, and, being an old theater, an interesting interior (look up when you get to the register). Service is OK. Item availability is typical for 99 cent stores, but they do carry a lot of produce. It can be somewhat crowded but it isnt too bad.

If you can, call the store before heading over to this location. According to google maps the store hours are supposed to be till 9pm but I’m here (Monday 4/20/20) and they were closed at 8pm.

Security guard watched me the whole time..and no one else. I was there 20 minutes or less..as I was walking towards item I needed. Cashier was packaging item, while 1 customer ahead, and when she gets to me..I informed her I want beverages in cooler, wrap glitter gifts in paper, and gift bags in same bag. She puts bags to the side, and I repeat putting gift bags in same bag, and beverages. Then she had a little attitude as she puts beverages in cooler..I hope asking her to do her job wasnt too much!

Most days, you can snag great bargains here. Sometimes they even have organic produce and first label brands available. Occasionally theyre sold out of the good stuff and have mostly processed food.

Inside this massive refurbished theatre is everything you could possibly imagine for 99 cents. That makes a lot of the food questionable, but some items are totally fine. I got a cheap utensil holder that works great, and some aluminum foil that doesnt work so great.

Great prices, friendly staff. Sometimes smoke from the next door BBQ takeout is intense in the parking lot, but they have great ribs.

Wow, Ive got to say this is absolutely thee best 99 Cents store that I have ever been in ! ! ! At first I was thinking why is it kind of dark inside when walking in yet the hundred foot tall ceiling with all the murals around the whole circumference of it when it used to be a theater explained it to me Instantly !!!!! I dont know the history of the building of who,what, where, why, and when but I was pleasantly surprised and three cheers to the person who decided to make this place home for their store, bravo ! Being able to see art especially on a grand scale is a fabulous reminder of just how beautiful the world and the people in it are, Michael

The cashiers hate you. Dont blame them - theyre conditioned to. People are generally a cranky crowd around them. Havent had a good experience as of yet via cashier. Oh well. The snack and miscellaneous items here are pretty reasonable quality for the dollar! I can pick up chips and candy galore for movie night 😋

A lot of the produce there is really good and fresh. Im amazed at all the fruits and veggies you can buy for $0.99/lb (sometimes less)! Plus, they have some good snacks.

I waited in line for 40 minutes while a new cashier struggled with an error in the register with 2 customers in front of me. The entire place got backed up and when the manager finally came to help she opened a new register by the furthest wall making eye contact and waiving to people just walking up to checkout rather than taking the next customers waiting on line. We’ve all been new at some point so I have patience with the clerk but the manager was out of line and had a rude defensive response. Treat people with the consideration you would want and be professional. It’s not too much to ask at any price point.

Its crowded and noisy - even with no other customers there. And its a maze of aisles, always with one or two aisles blocked with employees stocking the shelves.But the fresh fruits and veggies - and beverages - are as good as many chain groceries. Theres always something new to try - for $.99. Rarely for $1.99.You can fill an entire shopping bag for less than $30. Try doing that at TJs.

Its a dollar store, so its nice to have around when you need random dollar store items. That parts great! The reason I dinged it a couple stars is that the place has some problems. The biggest one is that they almost never have enough checkers so you can wait an absurdly long time.
